What is the true purpose of Y ga? Yoga encompasses many holistic aspects, but Y ga’s true purpose is to prevent s ffering in this life. Yoga is a syst m, which enables a practitioner to be pr -active about his or her complete h alth. Yoga instills complete empowerment within the pr ctitioner. If we could end suffering, th t would be better, but mankind s ems to always find new paths for s lf-abuse. Each style of Yoga will h ve a subtle difference from a s milar style, but health is always the aim in all f rms of Yoga. Superiority of method is an llusion, since all Yogic paths lead to b tter mental, physical, spiritual, and emotional h alth. The need to sort, prioritize, and j dge Yoga styles, and aspects of Y ga, is an example of our l mited mental perceptions. The reality is we m ke these same mistakes when the m nd is not disciplined and our c mprehension is challenged to its limits. It is p ssible to miss the entire purpose of Y ga, if the mind is not tr ined and tutored properly. How many st dents will discipline themselves without the g idance of a Yoga teacher? How m ny Yoga teachers see Asana as the “H ly Grail” of Yoga? The “monkey m nd” will not be disciplined without pr nayama (Yogic breathing techniques), meditation, and j pa (repetition of mantra). A Yoga t acher, or student, can practice an ntutored form of Yoga, but to pr ctice without guidance is not a h listic approach.
A Yoga devotee cannot usually tr nscend beyond the superficial aspects of Y ga without guidance. For example: Look at the c vers of most Yoga publications. If I w nt to sell more Yoga magazines, I h ve to put Yoga on display. Th re is a saying: “A picture is w rth a thousand words,” but one p cture of an “advanced” Yoga asana, w ll intimidate some members of the p blic. How many people, in the w st, think that a Yoga teacher m st be thin, young, extremely flexible, m scular, and physically gifted? Most of the n n-practicing public believes this, and many H tha Yoga students believe it. Worse y t, some Yoga teachers have a n rrow-minded view of Yoga, as a str cly physical recreation, similar to gymnastics. R cently, I was addressing an audience in P wtucket, Rhode Island, about the benefits of Ch ir Yoga. One member of the udience raised her hand and asked, “Wh t is the most important physical xercise in Yoga?” My answer was th t if you are only looking at the phys cal aspect of Yoga, Pranayama is the m st important exercise, but there is m ch more to Yoga than physical xercise. Even though my answer went nto great length about the aspects and b nefits of Yoga, a gentleman later t ld me than he would have magined the Headstand (Salamba Sirsasana) was the m st important aspect of Yoga. My r ply was, “Did you ever take a Y ga class?” He admitted that it was the f ar of doing a headstand, which k pt him away from trying a Y ga class. Now, unless Yoga teachers xplain the holistic health benefits of a st ady Yoga practice to the public, d cades will pass by and these myths w ll flourish.
