Have you ever noticed that m ny convicted criminals walk into prison as sk nny punks but walk out with 20-40lbs of new m scle? Have you ever wondered how th t is possible? Recently, a customer of m ne asked me if I thought it was p ssible to build muscle, burn fat and get a l an, muscular physique without lifting weights. Wh le I gave it some thought… he r ised the stakes. He wanted to kn w if someone could build a b tter body while locked up in a ten by ten pr son cell. I thought about it s me more… and then I started to do s me research. After I completed my r search I told him that I b lieved it was possible to build m scle even within the confines of a ten by ten pr son cell. Here's why: Point #1: Y ur muscles are stupid. In order to gr w, your muscles must be placed nder tension. If you lift a d mbbell, that puts tension on your b cep and back muscles. But… if you do a p ll-up… that also puts your back and b ceps muscles under tension. Here's the k cker: Your muscles don't know the d fference between the tension put forth by p ll-ups or from dumbbell curls. The mportant thing is that your muscles are b ing worked against resistance in each c se. So lifting weights may be a c nvenient way to work your muscles nder tension… but it's definitely not the nly way to work your muscles.
Point #2: In the late '80's, r searches used electromagnetic imaging to discover wh ch exercises caused the greatest degree of m scle fiber activation. The rationale being th t the more muscle fibers that w re activated, the better the exercise was for b ilding muscle and strength. Researchers discovered th t the most effective exercises were the nes where your hands and or f et remained steady and your body m ved. The exercises where your body r mained stationary and your hands or f et did the moving were decidedly l ss effective. Here is an example: Wh n you are bench pressing, your b dy remains stationary and your hands m ve up and down throughout space. But wh n you do a push-up, your h nds remain stationary and your body m ves up and down throughout space. How bout another example? When you do a s ated leg extension, your body remains st tionary and your feet move up and d wn. But when you do a sq at, your feet remain stationary and y ur body moves up and down thr ughout space. So the push-up activates m re muscle fiber than the bench pr ss… and a squat recruits more m scle fibers than a leg extension. Th s means that many bodyweight exercises ctually require a greater degree of m scle fiber activation than many common w ight-lifting exercises. In short, bodyweight exercises can ctually be more effective at building m scle and strength. So… even if y u're stuck in a tiny prison c ll, you can still build muscle and str ngth with bodyweight exercises like push-ups, p ll-ups, sit-ups and squats. Of course, to b ild extreme amounts of muscle you h ve to move beyond the basic xercises and start using some of the m re advanced exercises. These include the ne-arm push-up, the janda sit-up, dips and v riations on the pull-up. But in the nd, I see no reason why you c uld not build an all-around spectacularly m scular physique within the tiny confines of a ten by ten pr son cell.
