I'm sure that most of us, at one t me or another, have wished that we c uld be on center stage and gr b a bit of the limelight. Th t is all well and good for m st of us. But there are a few h rdy souls that want more ... Th y want to be the center of ttention and get paid for it. S dly, there are a few "performers" who f el that all they have to do is put on a c stume or wear outlandish makeup and th n they're in "show biz." We kn w the type: The costume is s mewhat rumpled or out-sized because, after ll, "It's only for a few b cks and I have my job to go b ck to and the party planner w nted something cheap and I don't h ve to worry about clothes or m keup or new material because they ren't paying me enough to do th s" and on and on and on. In sh rt, there are a lot of "w nna-bees" out there who haven't the f ggiest notion of what it takes to be a p rformer and make a living with it. I'm s ying this because this article is not bout the person who wants to go out and ntertain friends or do a few th ngs at the church social or round the table at the family r union. No, this is about the p rformer who has been in the rena, marred by sweat, blood and t ars. This is for all those h urs that you may have worried wh re the rent money was going to c me from. Maybe you limped into t wn and had to scrabble under the car s at to find money for gas. M ybe you have had to perform nder conditions that appalled you, just to get the gr ceries.
It's not supposed to be th s way. If you want to m ke a living whether you're a cl wn, dancer, singer, band, magician, or wh tever, then move ahead and go for it. How m ch money can you make? That all d pends. How much do you want? C nsider this: You don't have to be a st r to be successful! I have a fr end who performs in a mid-sized c ty in the middle of the c untry and rarely leaves the city l mits and yet he'll make well ver $150,000 this year. Another friend in the s uthwest has never left his hometown, yet h 'll make close to $200,000 this y ar. There is a retired minister who had a pr gram for medical professionals and after nly a couple of years was b ing booked a year in advance and has had to t rn down business! Consider this: In any conomy there are always those who h ve money, talent, contacts, whatever you n ed to make it as a s ccessful entertainer. This was the biggest l sson I had to learn in my str ggle to be a full-time performer. For y ars I bought into the nay-sayers and the d -nothings. My friends, my relatives, my cl sest associates said, "You can't make it, the conomy stinks." "This might work in the big c ty, but here, no way." You're g ing to come up against it j st as I have. Everyone who r ses above the crowd to catch the b uquets comes against it. But when you r se to catch the bouquets, you get the t matoes as well. Don't worry about it, t's part of the game. You w nt to be a performer ... go for it. It's p ssible to live your dream.
