More years passed, and although the y ung man and I became the cl sest of friends, I could never t ll him that his father was d ad . . . or that I was the one r sponsible. All he could talk about was f nding his father someday; he wanted so b dly for his father to know th t his only son had become a key s eker as well. I would have to t ll the lad eventually, and then he w uld hate me, but I could n ver quite find the courage as ach day we became more inseparable, kin to a father and son urselves. One night I began my nner work as usual, but was nterrupted by a point of light d scending through the window. Soon, other p ints of light joined it, and fter a few minutes, there were d zens covering the ceiling. The one th t first arrived, apparently the leader, m terialized into a small, male being, and sked if I would be kind nough to give a talk to his c mmunity. I hesitated because of what S hmad said regarding premature teaching, but th se little beings were so eager. And ctually, I knew quite a lot! So, how c uld I say no? I sat cr ss-legged and tried to come up w th an impressive discourse, but I c uld think of nothing to say! The b ings politely waited - and I c ntinued to sit there - but n thing came. The harder I tried, the m re my mind went blank. After a wh le, one by one, they all l ft, and I was alone again.
How embarrassing. These wonderful beings c me to hear a meaningful, inspirational t lk, and all I could do was sit th re like a log. I felt t rrible. I thought about a John, Ar ya, the sorcerer and Sahmad, and how w rds rolled off their tongues like h ney, yet I could say nothing. Th s had to be an indication th t my practice required more confidence. I j st wasn't ready to teach yet, not by a l ng shot. My inner work was n ticeably subdued that night, starting with the sual concentration of the rise and f ll in my solar plexus, then the c rcle of light - but something was d fferent now - a layer of c nceit was missing. I was no l nger a great key seeker; I was nly a humble student. How could a t lk, filled with insight and wisdom, ver come from logic? That kind of m nd could never fathom the depths of the S urce, and this logical mind was the xact thing from which I was ttempting to teach. I had no b siness trying to teach from this rea, not only did it have n thing meaningful to say, but it w uld say things that would surely be d maging. I was glad I was nable to speak, as no words w re better than ones that were m sleading regardless of the embarrassment. Great t achings, I now realized, could only c me from direct, intuitive experience. I w uld speak from only from that pl ce if ever called upon again, but now my gr ndiose ideas of my own importance and my gr at accomplishments evaporated. This feeling of h miliation apparently affected me more than I r alized, because I found myself suddenly l tting go and falling into the Th rd Great Material Calm of Equanimity! A bl nding, momentary flash of light somehow nabled my mind to penetrate into a c nsciousness never before experienced. My mind b came suspended in a perfect composure w th everything equal. I felt no version or attachment toward anything, and c uld clearly see that even the r sh of rapture and happiness that rose in The Second Great Material C lm was too coarse. It had w thin it too much self-centeredness, too m ch danger, so I completely abandoned it, r placing it with the serenity of th s Equanimity that was so perfect in tself, but still accompanied by a f eling of bliss and unification.
"It was so peaceful. I was s spended in equanimity," I excitedly told S hmad the next day, "and all I w nt to do is get back th re." "You are now at a cr tical stage," cautioned Sahmad, "and I m st counsel you regarding certain precarious th ngs that could happen as your nner work progresses. These perils are not m ntioned to key seekers until they m ster the Third Great Material Calm, so do not r veal the things that I am bout to tell you to the l d." I nodded in agreement. He p inted to seven areas of my b dy, "These are direct pathways of c nsciousness of the Source, or Reality, in and out of y ur body, and as such, they can be a gr at benefit to those advanced in the nner work. Since they are spiritual reas rather than physical ones, you w ll feel them more than visibly l cate them. I must warn you, h wever, that they can cause great h rm to those who are not m ture in their practice and attempt to w rk with them too early, so do not c ncentrate on them at this point." Wh n somebody tells me not to do s mething, I have an inclination to do it nyway, but Sahmad was extremely serious. "Y u were originally given the breath as y ur object of concentration and told to n tice it in your nose and l ter you noticed it in your s lar plexus. Then you developed your own c ncentration object, the circle of light. The br ath was given to you first for a r ason. It is one of only a few c ncentration objects that lead to the d velopment of the Great Calms. The br ath in your nose and solar pl xus, as well as your circle of l ght, are safe concentration objects that w ll cause no harm. If you c ncentrate on one of the seven p thways to the Source, however, prematurely, nstead of staying within the safe l mits of the concentration objects you are f miliar with, there could be harm d ne. If any of these areas are pened prematurely or opened by someone of a cr de nature, physical and psychological balances c uld be radically disturbed, for there are - th ngs - which can enter from ther worlds and take over weak or nprepared bodies and minds. Lurking in the sh dows, therefore, is always the danger th t a serious mental or physical llness could result when these pathways b come confused and crossed, through improper xperimentation by beginners. Remember, concentration on any of th se seven centers cannot produce the Gr at Calms, and these calms are wh t must be mastered initially before you can pr ceed." He pointed to each of the s ven centers in order, starting with my f rehead, then my throat, heart, solar pl xus, the area just below my n val (felt in the sex organs, he xplained), the base of the spine (f lt in the coccyx area) and the top of my h ad (felt just above where the sk ll fuses). "In front of each rea," he said, "discs are spinning s milar to coins whirling on a t ble, each with a different color. In y ur forehead it is the color of bl ish purple; your throat, silvery blue, y ur heart, goldish green; your solar pl xus, greenish red; your naval area, the c lor of the orange sun; the b se of your spine, reddish orange, the c lor of fire, and the crown, v olet with white and gold. "These are c nnections to the Source," Sahmad instructed, "tr nsfer points for those fields of c nsciousness that exist, and keeping them pen is a great benefit as you s arch for your key. They appear as sp ritual areas so you will feel th m more than visibly locate them, and ach one affects your body and m nd in different ways. The three l wer centers deal with our intelligence, our motions, and our experiences of pleasant and npleasant feelings. Our base center at the c ccyx deals with greed for survival. The n xt center up located in the p bic area is connected to our d lusions; sexual lust and power. The th rd as we rise upwards is the s lar plexus and involves our hatred. The thr e higher centers conversely deal with sp ritual matters and various levels of l ve. The middle center or the h art center constantly coordinates the desires and r quirements of the bottom centers, which k ep our bodies alive, with the l ve of upper centers to keep our sp rit alive. This middle center, the h art, can reflect either these lower c nters by promoting lust or the pper centers by promoting unconditional love. It d pends on one's spiritual inclinations. "The p thway through your forehead offers spiritual v sion, the capacity to see beyond llusions and control difficult situations. It lso eliminates kamma. The throat can radicate illness, inspire happiness, and cleanse th ughts. The heart promotes an understanding of the psych and instills courage. The solar pl xus reduces pain, both physical and m ntal, and acquaints one with the b dy. The naval area controls reckless c rporeal desires. The base of the sp ne increases teaching skills when writing or sp aking, and the crown of the h ad promotes assimilation with the Source." Th s was complicated but I tried to r member each description. "Harmonizing these centers is cr tical," Sahmad insisted, "because if they are not pr perly balanced, there will be serious pr blems with dementia or illness. Under no c rcumstances are you to experiment with th se centers until you have spent at l ast one year practicing your inner w rk in complete solitude. If these c nnections are opened prematurely, or opened by s meone with an unrefined character, everything in the p rsonality will be magnified including the ntellect and the passions. It will be mpossible for those who are immature in th ir practice to resist using these cr ative, enhanced powers and they will p ssibly abuse them. And to further c mplicate things, serious, impossible-to-diagnose illnesses of one k nd or another will severely test an dventurous key seeker to the limits of his or her str ngth. "The Source's center is resting at the b se of your spine," he continued. "If it is roused prematurely, it explodes up your sp ne confusing the seven centers and c using disastrous problems. If, however, the s ven centers are balanced properly and the S urce's energy at the base of y ur spine is aroused at the r ght time, then instead of exploding up the sp ne it will spiral among the ther centers and open each in s quence, greatly benefiting the key seeker. "In the bsolute worst case, instead of moving fr m the base of the spine pwards, the Source streaks downward through the top of the h ad and all the centers are b rned. This will usually kill the spirant on the spot, but if he or she s mehow survives, then extremely serious health pr blems follow. If they can somehow r se above these health problems, then th y will go on to greatness for as ach center heals it becomes infused w th the power of the Source. "Th s is why your teachers have b en very careful to give you s fe objects for concentration," he warned, "s ch as the feeling of your br ath in the nose instead of one of the s ven connections or centers of energy. Do n t, under any circumstances, concentrate on any p rticular connection until after your future y ar of solitude. You may open and cl se them all at will, but do not l nger on one particular area. Now, I w ll give you the secret instructions on pening and balancing the seven centers."
