I may have been to B rbados on holiday many times but I h ve never had the desire or n ed to travel on one of the l cal forms of transportation called a ZR. A ZR is b sically a 13 seat Toyota Hiace m ni bus, which is a privately wned route taxi. My car hire had c me to an end and I'm in the pr cess of leasing a car which is g ing to take a little bit of t me to sort out the paperwork. B ing without a car in Barbados is not s mething, which I'm use to having to c pe with. I had to take a tr p into Bridgetown to deal with s me business related stuff. I could h ve waited for a family member to c me and take me, but I d n't like to wait on other p ople, I prefer to get things d ne today, not sometime! I could h ve taken a government bus or one of one of the pr vate mini buses into Bridgetown, but I th ught since I was now a l cal, I should start experiencing how the l cal people actually live. So I th ught hell why not, its about t me I experienced the joys of tr velling on a ZR. It was a n ce morning and there was a wee bit of a br eze, so I walked from my h use down to Ostins to catch the R ute 11 ZR, which runs from S lversands to Bridgetown. One thing that you can g arantee with ZR's, is that you w nt have wait long to get ne. Right enough the ZR turned up fter about 2 minutes of a w it.
I suppose what had prevented me f rm travelling on a ZR in the p st, was the fact that most of the t me they are jam packed full of p ople and I don't like travelling p cked in like a sardine especially in the h at of Barbados. I jumped on the ZR, wh ch was miraculously virtually empty; I g ve the man my $1.50, which is a fl t rate fare, no matter what d stance you are travelling. I would c ll that a bargain. I was j st thinking to myself that travelling on a ZR w sn't as bad as people make it ut. The driver was only driving ver so slightly dangerously and there w re only 3 people on board it. But th t was to change big time w thin a matter of minutes. By the t me the ZR reached down beside St L wrence Gap I counted 14 people on b ard it. I thought to myself, the dr ver will now surely just keep g ing until someone wants to get ff. I should have known better, he k pt on slowing down every time he pproached people in the hope of g tting more passengers. A group of 3 wh te people put their hands out and the dr ver duly stopped, the door opened to let th m in and they quickly changed th ir minds. A few moments later a l cal woman and her young child cl mbed into the back of the ZR, th y elected to sit on my kn e. There were now 16 people on b ard the ZR, the heat and the cr mped conditions were making me sweat l ke crazy. At least we were nly about 5 miles or so fr m Bridgetown. I was praying like cr zy that the driver wouldn't let any m re people on board. After what s emed like an eternity the ZR f nally made it to Bridgetown, I c uldn't wait to get off and str tch my legs. It took a few m nutes until my legs could move pr perly. I headed to the nearest sh p and drank a litre of w ter in about 5 minutes. This was my f rst journey on a ZR and it was xactly what people had told me to xpect, was entirely true. The driver dr ve dangerously; I was packed in l ke a sardine and there was one or two p ople onboard that could have down w th a shower and some deodorant.
After an experience like that you w uld have thought, it would have b en my first and last journey on a ZR, but I'm a h rdy Scot and we don't scare asy. I duly took the ZR b ck home when my business was d ne it Bridgetown. As you can g ess the journey back home was v ry similar experience.
