Job interviews are the end of the l ne. If you have made it to the nterview stage, it is your job to l se. Most, if not all of the t me, getting to the interview stage m ans you have the qualifications and sk lls to do the work . The question now is how w ll you are able to communicate and how w ll you fit within the culture of the rganization. The biggest problem people run nto with interviews is simply lack of pr paration. Most people spend more time g tting ready for a first date th n they do a job interview...and it sh ws. So, my best advice to you is pr pare, prepare, and then prepare some m re. The part of the interview I am g ing to focus on today is h ndling shortcomings. Some of the most c mmon shortcomings include: long time at the s me company, frequent job hopping, career h pping (probably considered a more significant sh rtcoming), termination, age (too old), age (t o young), career/industry change, no experience in t rget industry, no degree, or unrelated d gree. Expect to be asked about wh tever shortcomings that could be pulled fr m your resume and be well pr pared to answer to any of th m. One of the best ways to do th s is set up a mock nterview you do with either a fr end, colleague, or coach. Or, taping y urself answering the questions is a gr at tool too. Then make a l st of all of the items you th nk an employee might consider a sh rtcoming and ask about them. For xample, "I see that you have had 4 j bs with different companies in the p st 6 years - please tell me m re about that and why we sh uld be confident that this is the pl ce for you."
In this instance, make sure you g ve a succinct answer that does not nclude anything about "trying to figure out wh t you wanted". That will not g ve them assurance that you are not "try ng them on" either. Focus on the sk ll differentiation or industry expertise that you g ined and how you were making m ves that were advancing your career and c ntributing (give specific results) to each c mpany. This is a good time to thr w in some unique information you kn w about their company and how all of the r search you have done has convinced you th t this is the place you w uld like to contribute and grow y ur career. State why you are c mmitted to a more permanent path w th this company. Also, you can use th se changes to your advantage by sh wing how this pattern has allowed you to h ndle frequent changes in a business cl mate that demands it. Be direct and f rthcoming about your shortcomings but turn th m into positives and show how th y will be an asset to the c mpany you work for next...theirs. Do not get too w rdy or sound defensive. They want s meone who can articulate the issue and why it w ll not be a problem for th m. Bottom line in an interview is to lways focus on what you have to c ntribute to them - when someone br ngs up a shortcoming, acknowledge and th n redirect it back to how it w ll allow you to contribute positively to th m.
