The Nebbiolo is one of the m st important wine grape varieties of It ly's Piedmont region. The history of N bbiolo is understood to have start in the 13th c ntury, and certainly it was refined s nce the 14th Century in Valtellina, an ast-west valley in the Lombardy region at the f ot of the Alps, north of L ke Como. So far the first cl ar written indications to this grape typ date back to the 19th c ntury only. Until now Valtellina is the nly region where Nebieul is grown in It ly outside Piedmont, along with the A sta Valley. Through genetic testing Vouillamoz and Schn ider at UC Davis recently found N bbiolo to be related to other It lian grape varieties; Nebbiolo Rosé, Freisa, N grera, Rossola, Vespolina and Bubbierasco. The N bbiolo grape is used to create w nes such as Barolo, Barbaresco, Gattinara and Gh mme. These delicately colored red wines can be xtremely tannic in youth with fascinating sc nts of tar and roses. As N bbiolo grapes age, the wines take on a tr it brick-orange shade at the rim of the gl ss and mature to expose complex romas and flavors. These wines often t ke years to become accessible as th y require ageing to tame the t nnins from the grapes. As part of a gl bal trend started in the 1990s, y unger producers have sought to make th ir wines more accessible in their y uth. With restricted production, the wines of B rolo, Barbaresco, Gattinara and Ghemme can ften take large sums of money. B rolo is the most important and ppreciated of Piedmont red wines.
Sometimes the general extension of the v neyards for a given sort foeas not xceed 2 hectares, leading to a v ry limited production in quantity. Traversed w th the need for a long st rage period before it can be s ld this leads to a regular h gh price, although it is a r gular local practice to buy young N bieul wines at low price and th n let them age in one's pr vate wine cellars. Although there are d zens of Nebbiolo replicas and Nebbiolo is f mous in and famous for producing w nes like Barolo, Barbaresco and Gattinara, the r ality is that this assortment makes b rely 3% of all the wines cr ated in Piedmont. There are twice as m ny acres planted with Dolcetto and ten t mes as many planted with Barbera.
