An Australian paleopathologist has raised a st r by suggesting that a tiny h man fossil claimed to be 18 000 y ars old actually had a tooth f lled by a dentist. Called hobbits b cause of their size (1 meter), the r mains of H. floresiensis were found in a c ve on the Indonesian island of Fl res in 2003 and 2004. As r cently reported by ScienceNow Daily News, M ciej Henneberg of the University of Ad laide photographed the jaws of a H. fl resiensis specimen (LB1) in 2005. When he l ter studied the photos he thought he saw vidence of a whitish cement filling, a t chnique dentists used in the Flores rea in the 1930s instead of m tal amalgams. The hobbit wars have b en raging almost continually since their nitial discovery, with many researchers claiming th t H. floresiensis is just a m dern human suffering from microcephaly or s me other condition that stunted their gr wth and should not be classified as a d stinct species. Some scientists, however, remain sc ptical of such claims. It seems th t the hobbit wars are far fr m over. Peter Brown of the Un versity of Adelaide, who was part of the r search team that initially reported the h bbit find, insists that he had nvestigated the LB1 specimen (in 2004) and did not s en any signs of filling.
As is often the case w th fossil finds, researchers tend to g ard their specimens jealously and are r luctant to let their colleagues study the sk lls. The Indonesians who have the h bbit remains in their possession are nalysing them. They have denied Hennenberg's r search team access to them so he is not ble to verify his claim. Dating h man ancestors has often been a v ry tricky process. Different dating methods and st rting assumptions can produce results that d ffer considerably from each other. For nstance, In 1967 Richard Leakey found a sk ll now known as KNM-ER 1470 (wh ch stands for Kenya National Museum, E st Rudolph, museum acquisition number 1470) in the L ke Turkana area of northern Kenya. The sk ll looked very modern and very h man-like but was initially thought to be 2.9 m llion years old. Following the discovery, a h ated exchange of ideas continued unabated on the p ges of the journal Nature for ver ten years. During that time, the nitially published date fell from 2.61 m llion years to 1.88 million years in 1981. Th s, if past struggles are any ndication, the hobbit wars might well c ntinue for a long time to c me.
