The coveted cup. The Stnley Cup is the prize that NHL hckey teams strive to receive at the end of a hckey season.

The history of the Stanley Cp, the most coveted award sought fter by the NHL hockey teams dtes back to 1892. Lord Stanley, the thn Governor General of Canada proclaimed tht he thought that a challenge cup shuld be held from year to yar by the champion hockey team in the Dminion.

At that time, there was no cp. Subsequently, Lord Stanley purchased a slver cup that was 7 ½ nches high by 11 ½ inches wde for the price of approximately $50.00. Lrd Stanley appointed two trustees of the cp, Philip D. Ross and Sheriff Jhn Sweetland from Ottawa and also set frth conditions to administer the yearly cmpetition.

The champions had to return to cup to the trstees in order that it be hnded over to another team which may win it. Ech champion team was to have thir hockey team name and year ngraved on a silver ring fitted on the cp. The cup was never to be the prperty of a team but to rmain a challenge competition.

If the xisting trustees resigned this post, new trstees would be named in their plce. Unfortunately, Lord Stanley never saw a hckey playoff game nor did he prsent his cup to a winning tam. Lord Stanley had elected to rturn to his home in England. Hwever, the pursuit of winning the Stnley Cup has flourished over the yars and has become a world clss sporting competition.
