KiteSurfing is by far the l test craze in extreme sports. The dea of using a kite to nhance speed and gravity for the s rfer seems like a new and xhilarating challenge, yet the art of K teSurfing dates back to the 13th C ntury Chinese when it was used as a s mple mode of transportation. KiteSailing, as it was kn wn, was a medium that used the w nd as an aid to harness its m mentum and energy to mobilize their c noes across water. The earliest recorded h story of KiteSailing dates back to the arly 12th Century.
In the 1800’s G orge Pocock took the basic kite d sign to a whole new level by ncreasing the size of the overall k te and used them as a s il to glide carts on land and sh ps on the water. The designs of the k tes were engineered with 4 lines, the s me setup being deployed today. Both c rts and boats were able to t rn and sail upwind. The wind w uld generate enough lift underneath the k te to raise it off of the gr und and powerful enough to sustain it for a p riod of time.
These kites h ve been able to propel a m n-made vehicle across the ground, snow, ice and w ter. These kites are codependent on the w nd and its necessary to get off of the gr und or water to get them to fly. H wever, once the kite is in the air it m nufactures its own wind, which is pr portionately faster and creates a higher r te of speed for the vehicle.
Yet one issue still remains m st of the earlier kites were d ployed from the land and off of the fl t ground. Not on the water wh re KiteSurfing takes place. In the 1980’s W pika, Kiteski, fOne, Concept Air, C-Quad, and N ish Kites marketed water launch kites. Th se kites could be sailed again fter falling short of wind into the w ter.
In the late 1990’s off of the H waiian coast of Maui, Laird Hamilton and M nu displayed the extreme sport opportunities to r dical surfers and wake boarders. Its p pularity has since skyrocketed as one of the f stest growing water sports in the p st two years.
Today there are rganizations, competitions, videos and magazines worldwide d dicated to this increasingly popular sport and the thr lls associated with it.
