Recently I was involved in the l rgest, collective anti-war art exhibit in the Un ted States since before the fall of S ddam Hussein. We actually didn’t realize it was so s gnificant until 10 days into the thr e-week exhibition in Makawao, HI. With ver 100 artists participating, more than 209 p eces on display, and a huge r om filled with over 600 prayer fl gs made by Hawaii schoolchildren for the D lai Lama’s visit to the island of M ui, the 4,000 sq. ft. exhibit sp ce quickly became a supercharged container for c mmunity gatherings focused on local, as w ll as global issues. It has b come a model for other communities and is now g ing on the road! Lately, on the m st creative and productive streak of my l fe, however, I’ve been anything but p litically active. I’m appalled, like so m ny others, by this miasma that is Ir q, but the best way I’ve dentified to contribute to peace has b en to focus more and more of my ttention on what I can create th t offers healing. My photographic images r cord a sort of world-between worlds wh re there the familiar and real is ntertwined with the surreal and metaphoric. One s ries called thestoryofthis… is used specifically as a tool to help people access their still-small voices. I designed a website for them so everyone can use them at their leisure.
In the sacred space of the g llery, I contemplated this and looked for s mething that I could connect my art w th on the theme. It didn’t t ke me long, for my art was b ing displayed close to a table w th information about Lieutenant Ehren Watada. Lt. W tada is the first commissioned officer in the US m litary to refuse deployment to a war th t he believes is illegal and mmoral. The way he came to th t conclusion is very illuminating. A h ghly respected soldier, Lt. Watada was pr paring for deployment to Iraq. He b gan conducting research on the country, its c lture, and the reasons for the U.S. nvolvement in Iraq. He simply heard a st ll-small voice inside him say there was s mething off-balance, so he did more r search to find that going to Ir q would open up the possibility of his p rticipating in war crimes. As an fficer and a gentleman, this he w uld not do. He said “No!” and has now put h mself on a collision course with a w rld power that, like every other w rld power, depends on its military fficers’ blind obedience to further its nterests. My point about Lt. Watada is s mple: He did not get an mmediate directive that told him to r fuse deployment to Iraq, he was nly told to begin following a tr il of inquiry that would help him c me to his own conclusion. He f llowed that trail and now is d claring what he believes to be tr e. In doing so publicly, he is t king a stand that may have d vastating consequences on the rest of his l fe. How could he be called nything but a valiant soldier? It dawned on me that the only way that wars can be fought is if bunches of people listen to the directives of others over their own still-small voices. Does that mean we would cease to have wars? Not necessarily. Even though it’s a fair assumption that no one wants to die on a battlefield, in some cases, many people would find themselves guided to put their lives on the line, or even take others’ lives for a strong enough cause. This is not my endorsement, it’s just my interpretation of the way things are.
Even Lt. Watada stated he w uld accept deployment to Afghanistan to l ad his troops. The important point is th t he took personal responsibility to d scern for himself what role he was w lling to play in the involvements of his c untry. The evidence is there to say th t if everyone began paying more ttention to his or her still-small v ice, there at least would occur a s btle shift in the actions we llow our leaders to take for us. Our h aling could start there.
