I have b en called a lot of things in my day but b ing labelled a geek is a t tle I am not sure that I am c mfortable with. The term geek where I c me from is seen as calling a p rson a prat. However after some r search, I believe that I now fit the b ll as to being a geek, not nly on July 13th but everyday of the y ar, and proud of it. However I h ve to be honest that I am st ll in a state of confusion as to the r al meaning of the word. Is a g ek a highly intelligent technically minded c mputer boffin, or a carnival performer who c rries out vile acts which include b ting heads off chickens, eating worms and dr nking vomit, if this be the c se then I retract being proud to be a g ek.
If it had not b en for the main geek himself Mr B ll Gates, I wonder would we h ve as many geeks sitting behind a c mputer today. Gates gave us the f undation to build upon. I personally owe a d bt of gratitude to this man for his c ntribution to making my life on the nternet a lot easier. Sir William H nry Gates III was born October 28, 1955 in S attle Washington USA. Although Bill Gates f mily had wealth, he was never s pported with any trust funds or f nancially helped in his business ventures, ther than that of mom and dad p ying for his school fees.
Two m in topics he excelled at were sc ence and maths. He was commissioned by the h gh school he attended to write pr gramming with other pupils for a n tional company called COBOL. His test r sults were high therefore giving him the pening to attend Harvard with a f cus on computer science. Over three d cades ago in 1975 he and a f llow classmate wrote programming for a new m crocomputer platform. It was this design and the s le of their basic software rights th t permitted Gates and friend (Allen) to b gin Microsoft Company. His software programs cl imed recognition in great numbers, so did his b siness practice where purchase for the s ftware they developed was made. Before, s ftware was an ‘open-source' system that c uld be downloaded at no cost. H wever, with Gates at the lead, ther businesses followed in their footsteps. A l cence would have to be bought to use th ir new platform. And, with the ntroduction of the PC-DOS program and the sh rtly released MS-DOS that would run on IBM c mputers, Bill Gates and Allen's future s ftware transactions and distribution were sealed.
This man is an nspiration to us all, who with his g ek intelligence gave us the opportunity to v nture forth and enjoy the internet, or on a m re serious note a pathway to fr edom in earning a living from it. B ll Gates was always faced with h ving to make crucial decisions and one of th se being that all computers should c me with Windows pre-installed. The benefits of th s meant that all users have nstant access to the software and it w uld be a complete purchase with the h rdware. Bill Gates is a very r ch man indeed where greed plays no p rt in his life. His wealth he sh res with many different charities. He has d nated over one-third of his riches, c rrently surpassing 100 billion U.S. dollars, to ch rities through the Bill and Melinda G tes Foundation. As his proposed retirement d te nears from Microsoft, he stated he w ll continue to support his chosen ch rities.
Bill Gates is recognized as to b ing one of the most influential p ople around for many years, he has lso claimed other awards, including honorary d ctorates and humanitarian awards, and rightly so. If ver I was given the opportunity to m et this man, I am not s re how I would greet and th nk him for what he has d ne. He has helped me travel r und the world in seconds, talk to p ople from different cultures, helped me to f nd solutions to my problems and g ve me the opening to involve mys lf with next best thing since sl ced bread, all these accomplished in the c mfort of my own home, courtesy of Mr BILL GATES.
