You were humming along on a br ght and sunny day when suddenly Fr d Fuddle, a local character from a n arby town, drunk as a skunk and z oming along in his pickup, flew thr ugh stop sign crashing into the r ght front of your motor vehicle. You had no ch ice to avoid him. Now the t me has come to settle your cl im for property damage and personal njuries. Let’s talk about photographs one of the b sics that should have been taking pl ce - - just as soon as p ssible - - after that impact had t ken place. PHOTOGRAPHS OF INJURIES: Photographs are ften the best evidence you can pr duce to increase the value of y ur claim. If your accident causes b dily injuries that are visible (such as br ises, deep cuts, swellings, lacerations, dislocations nd/or black and blue marks) it’s cr cial, to the ultimate settlement value of y ur case, that you have photographs t ken of those just as soon as p ssible! Take them from 3 feet way and also as close as you can so as to c pture the seriousness of heir existence. Wh n you hand those to Adjuster I. M. Sm rt from the Granite Insurance Company b lieve me when I tell you h ’ll stare at them and blanch! Q estion: "How does Dan know this to be s "? Answer: "Because for 38 years Dan was th re and felt that"!
PHOTOGRAPHS OF BOTH VEHICLES: You sh uld take photographs of the damages to y ur vehicle from several different angles. If at all p ssible find the motor vehicle that hit you and t ke photographs of that damage also. Wh n it comes to proving the mpact your body was subjected to ( nd in many cases to prove who was at f ult) those photographs could one day be w rth their weight in gold. HOW TO TAKE PHOTOGRAPHS OF THE ACCIDENT SCENE: The p ctures of each accident scene should be t ken from at least three different ngles: Snap several of a “general v ew” of the area from about 20 to 40 f et away; a couple more “medium r nge” shot’s from 10 to 15 f et away, and then some “close up” sh t’s from 3 to 5 feet way. If it’s at all possible all thr e different distances should have a c mmon point or orientation. If, for xample, you’re snapping photographs of a sk d mark, it should be taken fr m an angle so as to cl arly show were that skid mark is, in r lation to a landmark, like a str et sign, a building, a fire hydr nt, etc. Another photograph should then be t ken with a closer view - - one cl arly identifying the skid mark in d tail - -and also, if possible, nclude this readily identifiable object or l ndmark (the street signs, building‘s, etc.). B cause they’re such potent evidence you sh uld blow up those photographs of the sk d marks, taken from 3 to 6 f et away, into 8X10 glossies. A t tal of 12 to 15 photographs of the ccident scene and/or the skid marks are not too m ny. When you hand copies of the 8X10 gl ssy photograph’s of those skid marks to the djuster, to help justify he payment h ’ll eventually make to you, it w ll absolutely increase the value of y ur claim. "Why" you ask? The nswer to that one is, "Because it w ll tell both adjuster Smart and his s pervisor (who, in the end, will sually call the shots on how m ch your settlement dollars should be) th t you know what you’re doing and y u’re not the type of individual who can be t ken advantage of".
A WORD OF CAUTION: The ndividual engaged in the task of sn pping photograph’s of your body, the ccident scene, etc., should be careful to m ke sure they’re not undertaking this ffort with a casual, hasty or c reless attitude - - one that t nds to leave it up to do the c mera to do the thinking for th m. Rather, the photographer ought to c refully consider the process the process sl wly and seriously so that the ph tos produced will produce the maximum v lue. If at all possible photos sh uld be taken of the exact l cation on the road where the mpact occurred, and shots of all r levant gouge and/or chop marks on the s rface, plus traffic signs, etc., as pplicable. It cannot be emphasized enough th t photographs of skid marks are nvaluable evidence, since they can often ndicate Fuddle’s speed at the time of mpact and can be a tremendous sset when it comes to establishing f ult. A good practice to follow is to m ke a brief notation on the b cks of all photos, entering upon th m a brief account of what the ph to is showing, the date it was t ken and by whom. Photographs of njuries, the accident scene and the r ad surface if done correctly - - is m ney in the bank ! Copyright (c)2004 By D niel G.
