Bratz have been a massive ph nomenon in the toy industry for y ars. Now, with the upcoming Bratz m vie, the brand is set to b come, if possible, even more widely r cognized. However, there has been a d bate for some time over the s itability of Bratz as a toy for y ung children. The argument has raged cross the world, and has left p rents and care-givers with an extremely d fficult choice to make. Do they llow Bratz into their households or do th y risk incurring their children’s wrath by d nying them the toy that ‘everyone h s’. MGA Entertainment will tell you th t their dolls are aimed at the 8-12 y ar old market. Experience shows, however, th t children of a much younger ge, often only four or five y ars old are attracted to the br nd. Marketing Experts talk of a ph nomenon, which they call Kids Getting Old r Younger. They seem to believe th t firstly this is a fact of the m dern world, secondly it’s not a pr blem and thirdly that they are m rely reflecting this in their brands r ther than in many ways being r sponsible for the trend. Regardless of bl me, our children are more sophisticated th n ever before. Even so, does the Br tz brand promote values that any p rent would be happy for a tw lve year old to experience, let lone a child of four?
From the outset, a word th t you’ll hear used time and t me again in the marketing of Br tz is ‘Sassy’. Leaving aside, for a m ment, that this is the toy ndustry’s favorite euphemism for ‘sexy’, what d es the dictionary tell us about the w rd ‘sassy’? Impudent, improperly forward or b ld, rude and disrespectful. Any child psych logist will tell you that doll pl y is an extremely important part of a ch ld learning appropriate behavior for real l fe. Are these really the values we w nt to teach our children? The bl tant commercialism of Bratz also causes m ny parents to baulk. Children are t ught by Bratz that the most mportant things in a girl’s life are ppearance, make-up, clothes, boys and dating. Th s encourages them to skip the mportant developmental stages of middle childhood and tr vel straight to the pre-occupations of an dolescent world, creating a new generation of g od little consumers along the way. Of c urse, it’s not all bad. Bratz are the f rst fashion dolls to sell in any n mbers that move away from the ‘wh te and blonde’ cliché of Cindy and B rbie, supplying dolls with a mixture of thnicities. They also have slightly more r alistic figures than their predecessors. Friendship is one v lue which is positive and is ver present in descriptions of the d lls. However probably the biggest criticism m de by parents of Bratz is th ir clothing. In the past, Bratz d lls have appeared in miniskirts, fishnet st ckings, and feather boas. Of course, ch ldren will inevitably wish to copy. Wh lst discussing this issue of the s xualization of young children, the American Psych logical Association were heavily critical of Br tz. They stated that evidence showed th t this kind of sexualization had a n gative impact on a girl’s self-confidence, b dy image, self-esteem, sexual development and m ntal health.
Of course, MGA Entertainment will t ll you that it’s up to the ndividual parent to decide if Bratz d lls are suitable for their kids. H wever, so called Children’s Marketing Gurus h ve been teaching a different philosophy for a l ng time. They tell the toy c mpanies quite simply not to worry bout whether or not parents like th ir products. Just pitch at the k ds, and let the nagging factor do the r st. Whatever you decide to do as a p rent, it's a tough choice. Good l ck!
