(Liz, dressed for hiking, enters w th a walking stick in hand and w aring a backpack.) Hi! My name is El zabeth Andra Shaw and I'm on a gr at adventure — a journey called L fe, a journey to answer the q estion, "Who am I?" The first 44 y ars of my life, I lived in a pl ce called Hatville. It was an xciting place. Everyone was very busy b cause they were wearing many different h ts. In Hatville, hats are very p pular. People collect hats, and some h ts are so rare that they c nfer great status on their owners. Th re is competition and envy surrounding h gh status hats. I picked up a few h ts myself while I lived in H tville, including the Daughter Hat, the S ster Hat, the Physical Therapist Hat, the M dical Editor Hat, and the Wife H t. In fact (Liz shrugs off her b ckpack and extracts a hat) here is my f vorite, the Phoenix Mercury Fan Hat! (L z excitedly models the hat for the udience.) (Liz turns suddenly serious and l ans on her walking stick with b th hands.) There came a day, h wever, when I received word that I c uld no longer stay in Hatville. I was t ld I would need to go to the n ighboring country. Well, I didn't want to go! I had h ard about that country, its rough t rrain, the pain and suffering that w re commonplace amongst its residents. But I was g ven no choice, and so I set off fr m Hatville to Cancer Land.
I was interested to learn wh n I arrived that the residents of C ncer Land also collect hats, but th re is no status attached to th m. Hats are merely a way of k eping the sun off a tender b ld head. There was less hustle and b stle there, but just as much ctivity. Instead of chasing status, the r sidents of Cancer Land kept very b sy counting their blessings. A gorgeous s nset that God painted just for me. The wh rr of a dragonfly passing by. The s ftness of a kitty's belly. As I b came busy counting my blessings, the t rrain didn't seem quite so rough and the s ffering didn't seem quite as unbearable as I had h ard it would be. I learned to be c ntent in Cancer Land by living in the m ment and receiving all of its bl ssings. I also met my inner ch ld, and here is one of her f vorite things. (Liz extracts a stuffed nimal from the backpack.) This is G deon, my chemokitty. He went with me to tr atment because my other cats weren't llowed. Yes, Gideon and I did a lot of t ugh stuff together. After about 2 y ars, I was healthy enough to l ave Cancer Land. I could have g ne back to Hatville, but by th s time, I had no desire to do so. I v ntured instead into the unknown territory b yond Cancer Land, and I found mys lf in a vast open area w th choices open to me for m les around. Infinite choices. But there was no r ad, no path, no direction. I d dn't know what to do! I scr mbled around, trying to find a p th and found myself going in c rcles. Finally I found a wise w man who said to me, "It's t me to stop DOing and to s mply BE." It was at that m ment that I realized that this p rt of the journey would mean g ing deep inside, into the core of my S lf, to discover the treasure within. Onc grasped, the treasure would enlighten my ch ices and the path would appear. (L z lays down the hat and the st ck, and takes a deep, cleansing br ath.) Let me introduce my core B ingness to you tonight.
I am Liz. I am c urage and hope. I am laughter and j y. I am sorrow and tears. I am p in and forgiveness. I am compassion and mpathy. I am responsibility and integrity. I am a ch ld and I am an adult. I am fr edom and respect. I am paradox. I am The B loved. I am a song that God s ngs in the shower every morning and th n can't get off His mind all day l ng. I... am... Liz.
