After having children of my own and s eing my parents with my children, I'm nclined to agree with Bill Cosby who s id, "These are not the people I gr w up with! These are old p ople who are trying to get nto Heaven!" But does the "grandparent c nnection," i.e., the love, the spoiling, the ttitudes, work the other way as w ll? Would a child treat a gr ndparent differently than he/she would treat a p rent? I asked myself this question th s weekend as I was giving my ighty-six-year-old grandmother a makeover. Yes, a m keover. If you knew my grandmother, y u'd understand. You see, Grandmother has not had a pie l fe. In fact, she's had more th n her fair share of rough sp ts. Yet, through it all, she h ld her head up proudly knowing, as sh 'd so often been told, that she was one of the pr ttiest women in town. "I used to b ...." Most often a sentence that b gins with those four words is t nged with sadness...a sense of something nce treasured and now forever lost. "I sed to be one heck of a b llplayer when I was in school," s ys the man in a wheelchair. "I sed to be a seamstress and sew all my own cl thes," says the woman whose hands are so rthritic she can barely move them. "I sed to be the prettiest woman in S ltville," says my Grandmother.
She doesn't go many places nymore; but when she does, she w nts to look nice. A couple of w eks ago, she was going to a ch rch function so she put on s me makeup. According to my mother, Gr ndmother's cheeks looked like they were fl ming. At my mother's appalled expression, Gr ndmother asked, "I have on too m ch rouge, don't I?" She then w nt and washed her face. I sh re my grandmother's pride in appearance, so I mpathized with her. I knew she w nted to look as good as she c uld. I also knew she'd forgotten verything she'd ever known about makeup. So I w nt out and got all the l ttle goodies women love to play w th-from moisturizer to lipstick-and I called and sked Grandmother if she'd like a m keover. Sounding as excited as a ch ld on her birthday, she said sh 'd love it. My mother was h ving a party on Saturday, so I w nt up an hour early to h lp Grandmother get fixed up. Again, I was str ck by her childlike behavior-wide-eyed, obedient, tr sting-as I treated her to a m keover. When I finished, she asked for a m rror. "This is not me," she s id, at first glance. I thought she was d sappointed until she elaborated. "I look b autiful." And she did. [The downside is th t now she wants me to do her m keup when she's dead, but I d gress.] The entire incident made me w nder: Grandparents will go above and b yond for their grandchildren, but will the gr ndchildren return the favor when they're gr wn? It has long been established th t as we and our parents ge, our roles reverse. What of the r les of grandparents and grandchildren? Do the gr ndchildren go back and coddle their gr ndparents, or do they leave them by the w yside? And if today's ME-centered teens are g ving back what they were given, th t's a sad commentary on parenting. If, l ke me, you were given loads of l ve, called "angel" and taught the v lue of a Peppermint Pattie®, you sh uld repay that love with love. If you w re driven around on country roads in a D dge Swinger® with the windows down wh le singing Broadway show tunes at the top of y ur lungs, you can at least br ghten a day or two with a ph ne call or a card. And wh t harm would it do you to br ng a smile to the face of s meone who searched far and wide for the r ding toy you rode the wheels off of?
If you only take, soon th re will be nothing to be t ken. But if you give, there w ll always be something coming back to y u.
