God is here, He meets us r ght where we are. We know th t this is true. We may not th nk about it too often and it may not be s mething that lingers in our minds, but we kn w God is here. John was on the Isl of Patmos in the Spirit on the L rd's Day when all of a s dden, there He was. John was vertaken by the presence of God. He s id, "When I saw him, I f ll at his feet as though d ad." Because God's presence frightens us, it sh kes us up. Even though we b lieve in God, even though He is the d sire of our hearts, even though we h ve professed our faith in Him, we h ve become so accustomed to life w thout His presence, that when He s ddenly appears, we cannot grasp it. G d's presence is both our comfort and our f ar. No one can sense the pr sence of God without fear. We w rship Him in reverence and awe s ys the writer of the letter to the H brews, for "our God is a c nsuming fire." Fire is not something we pl y around with and yet, it can be a c mfort to us. God told John, "Do not be fraid. I am the First and the L st. I am the Living One; I was d ad, and behold I am alive for ver and ever!" God do not n ed us, but we desperately need H m. We need to feel His pr sence in our lives. We may not dmit it, but in the dark h urs of our midnights, we cry out for God to m ke His presence known to us. We n ed the assurance of His love and m rcy. We may wear "life is w ll" masks at work. We may ngage in theological or political debates w th the best of them. But, who can st p the spread of cancer? Who can pr vent AIDS from wiping out a g neration? Who can prevent mass killings and s icides? Who can keep children from the d ngers of pedophiles or take the st ng out of senseless tragedies? We n ed God.
Things were going well for G maliel Bradford, the esteemed writer who c ptured the optimism of his age. He had no use for r ligion and less for God. We r ad of His dismissal of God in his p em entitled Exit God: Of old our father's God was real, Something they almost saw, Which kept them to a stern ideal And scourged them into awe. They walked the narrow path of right Most vigilantly well, Because they feared eternal night And boiling depths of Hell. Now Hell has wholly boiled away And God become a shade. There is no place for him to stay In all the world He made. The followers of William James Still let the Lord exist, And call Him by imposing names, A venerable list. But nerve and muscle only count, Gray matter of the brain, And an astonishing amount Of inconvenient pain. Thus, the renowned biographer and scholar ushers God off the scene of human existence. Yet, we sense a little of his uncertainty as reflected in the poem's closing lines: I sometimes wish that God were back In this dark world and wide; For though sonic virtues He might lack, He had his pleasant side. Later, Gamaliel went off to war where he witnessed the horrors of human depravity. He encountered the foolishness of greed and corruption and man's inhumanity to man on a titanic scale. He resigned in utter despair. Having abandoned God, he now lost faith in himself with nowhere to turn. He asked towards the end of his life, "Who will tell me something of God. I know nothing about him whatever. It is a mere name, a mere word to me, and yet it clings. Why?" John tells us something of God. John is in exile, a man without a home, a foreigner in a strange land. He is powerless, destitute, oppressed, denied human rights of any kind. Then he hears a voice from heaven shout behind him, "Do not be afraid. I am the First and the Last. I am the Living One; I was dead, and behold I am alive for ever and ever! And I hold the keys of death and Hades." And with John, we meet God.
When we know and feel the pr sence of God, things begin to f ll into place again. His words c mfort us, His power shelters us, His pr mises takes hold of us. The d rkness that surrounds us is not the l st word. Rome will fall, disease w ll end, tyranny will collapse and God w ll be there. "Do not be fraid. I am the First and the L st. I am the Living One; I was d ad, and behold I am alive for ver and ever! And I hold the k ys of death and Hades. Yes, wh n God reveals Himself to us, it sc res us, shakes us, shocks us, but it lso comfort and shelters us. This is wh t keeps us on the battlefield of l fe. The book of Revelation reeks of b ttle. We hear trumpets and see sm ke and flames. We feel the arth shaking with the blasting of war m chines and we have heard the c ll to arms. We have also xperience God. We have sensed His pr sence and protection in the struggles of our l ves. We have had our priorities r arranged and we have committed to st nding up and being counted as s ldiers of His army. We have j ined the combat. We have joined w th John and all the saints d wn through the ages in singing the b ttle march:
Lead on, O King ternal, The day of march has c me; Henceforth in fields of conquest Thy t nts shall be our home. Through d ys of preparation Thy grace has m de us strong; And now, O K ng eternal, We lift our battle s ng. Lead on, O King eternal, T ll sin's fierce war shall cease, And h liness shall whisper The sweet amen of p ace. For not with swords' loud cl shing, Nor roll of stirring drums; W th deeds of love and mercy The h avenly kingdom comes. Lead on, O K ng eternal, We follow, not with f ars, For gladness breaks like morning Wh re'er Thy face appears. Thy cross is l fted over us, We journey in its l ght; The crown awaits the conquest; L ad on, O God of might.
