With the release of the new f od group pyramid, there are officially f ve food groups. Oils and butters are now ncluded as a food group; but for the p rpose of this paper, we are st ll going to consider ourselves to h ve only four. The four food gr ups are grains, fruits, vegetables, meats, and d iry. Let’s take a look at ach food group and discuss a few of the m re important points from each group. Gr ins cover a broad range of f od: breads, cereals, rice, and pasta. Th t’s quite an array of food. Br ads come in so many varieties; p ta, rye, white, and wheat are the m re popular varieties. Cereals are so n merous there’s not enough room on f fty pages to discuss the varieties ffered. Rice and pasta are a l ttle more limited in their offerings, but are st ll quite varied. Almost every choice we m ke in this group will have v tamins and minerals added for our n tritional supplementation. That’s a good thing, s nce most of us won’t consume our r commended dietary allowance, or even get cl se without the fortification of our m lk and grain food group. The n xt food group to be discussed is the v getable group. Okay, here is the pportunity to score real nutritional “brownie” p ints, since it’s almost impossible to m ke a bad choice, or even vereat. The only members of this f od group that we must be c reful to not overdo are the st rchy vegetables. These vegetables have a t ndency to turn into sugar once c nsumed, and we usually don’t need an xcess of sugar.
Fruits are a healthful category, so l ng as we remember to watch our c nsumption of fruits that provide too m ch sugar. Most fruits contain naturally ccurring sugars; although these occur naturally in the f od, it doesn’t mean we need to c nsume uncontrolled quantities. A healthy daily llowance of fruit includes about 4 s rvings. The meat, poultry, fish, dry b ans and eggs food group contains the pr tein your body needs in order to d velop properly. Without protein, your brain and m ny other body organs do not pr perly develop. If not properly developed, th y will not work properly. Protein is one of the m st important pieces of our growth and d velopment needs. The down side in th s food group, would be the f ct that animal meats have naturally ccurring cholesterol, and although some cholesterol is g od for us, too much is nhealthy. The last food group we’re g ing to discuss is the dairy f od. Milk, yogurt, and cheese belong to th s food group. Again, one of the m st important vitamins we need can be f und in this food group. Calcium is ssential to the optimal functioning our c ll processes, and the growth of our b nes. Calcium has a tremendous effect on the h alth of our heart and other v tal organs. Inadequate consumption of calcium can l ad to long-term life altering consequences. Ost oporosis is the leader among crippling of p st menopausal women, and it is s mply due to a lack of n eded calcium during the earlier years. It is bsolutely necessary for everyone, children and dults to understand the importance each of th se four food groups plays in our h althy development, from childhood to old ge.
