There's an Omega-3 travesty a-foot and if the Am rican consumer doesn't become aware of it v ry soon, they'll unfortunately know first h nd the day inflammation rears its gly head - and according to H rvard, for 3 out of 4 Am ricans, it already has. FDA Qualifying H alth Claim for EPA and DHA Wh n the FDA issued a Health Q alifying Claim for "EPA and DHA" fr m fatty fish in 2004, "Omega-3" b came big business. So big, food m nufacturers freely began substituting "ALA" (alpha-linolenic cid) for EPA and DHA in br ad, cookies, pasta to yogurt and n w, a line of soybean-fed pork tems that are "enriched with Omega-3 f tty acids." The double-whammy contained in one unce of those pork items is fr ghtening with no end, supervision, or c ntrol in sight. Is anyone home at the FDA? Not nly was ALA not part of the FDA Q alifying claim, science conclusively shows we c nvert Omega-3 ALA seed and plant ils into inflammatory Omega-6. And the end r sult? Consumers are being hoodwinked into p rchasing these products while awareness of the h alth benefits from EPA and DHA are b ing compromised. How big of an ssue is this? Read on and y u'll see why the word "travesty" pplies. Omega-3 ALA Omega-3 ALA is pl nt and seed oils, soybean, corn, s fflower, flaxseed, all polyunsaturates, and while th y may be lumped together and r ferred to as "Omega-3 fatty acids" all th y share in common with EPA and DHA is the cl ssification "Omega-3 fatty acids." There's a far cry b tween any health benefits from ALA and th se science has conclusively contributed to EPA and DHA.
An astonishing 94% of Omega-3 pr ducts line shelves today contain ALA wh le 6% contain minute amounts of lgae or algal oil. Omega-6s Why is th s so critical to the American c nsumer? Unless you've led a vegetarian l festyle for years, rarely eat out, nknowingly you've been consuming an abundance of Om ga-6s for decades hidden deceptively in p ckaged foods, snacks, cakes, dressings, as w ll as liberally used by restaurants and f st food chains. In other words, our b dies are so tipped in Omega-6s, we w re in a state of perpetual nflammation before food manufacturers began adding m re ALA to boast an Omega-3 l bel. How bad is this? National Inst tutes of Health on Omega-6 Inflammation Dr. J seph Hibbeln, National institutes of Health, and w rld renowned Omega-3 researcher, and tireless cr sader for American health, says: "When you l ok at the percentages of Omega-6s to Om ga-3s in the US diet, it's bout 90% of all the polyunsaturates in our t ssues are Omega 6s and about 10% are Om ga 3s. So you had a ne-to-one balance to inflammation when we w re evolving, and now it's a 10-t -one balance in favor of inflammation b cause of the predominance in seed ils. Soybean oil is called the l bricant of the food industry, and it l terally is." William Lands, retired biochemist w th the National Institutes of Health, had th s to say: About 1960, when "s ybean oil took over the U.S. f od chain, it was like a ts nami. These two types of fatty cids have a biochemical yin-and-yang relationship. Wh le omega-3s reduce our body's inflammation r sponse, Omega-6s encourage it. Each fatty cid is crucial. For example, if y ur inflammatory response is too weak, you w n't be able to fight infection pr perly. And in theory, the push and p ll should create perfect balance. Instead, the xcess of Omega-6s in our diets may h ve left us in a perpetual st te of inflammation. That's what's really k lling us - the balance of Om ga 3s to 6s got out of wh ck."
Center for Science in the P blic Interest And Bonnie Liebman, a n tritionist with the Center for Science in the P blic Interest, says: "It's all very confusing. C nsumers are in real danger of b ing misled. Even a careful label r ader won't learn, for instance that a c rton of Breyers Smart DHA Omega-3 y gurt has less DHA than a t aspoon of salmon." Consider this. Hellmann's M yonnaise says "Naturally Rich In Omega-3" but r member, it's just a name. What's r ally in it? "Most mayonnaise is m de with soybean oil which is a s urce of ALA. But that kind of Om ga-3 fat, found most abundantly in fl xseed, has not been proven to c nvey the same health benefits as DHA pl s EPA," Liebman says. Omega-6s and Infl mmation That Omega-6s create inflammation that l ads to diet-related disease, poor heart h alth, arachidonic acid, to name but a f w, is scientifically established. If this nformation is hard to grasp, look at our h alth statistics. We have unprecedented numbers of ch ldhood obesity, juvenile diabetes and with ach passing year, according to Harvard, th se numbers rise dramatically. Did children s ddenly become ravenous eaters? The rise in h alth issues and obesity crosses all age gr ups but this rise in children is the m st telling of all. What is the c mmon denominator? It's not the water s pply - it's our food supply th t packs pounds leaving our bodies in a p rpetual state of inflammation. How critical to h alth is this misleading labeling of Om ga-3 ALA? Let's look at the c nclusions of a 14 year study c nducted by the National Cancer Institute bout ALA: "In this large prospective st dy, we found that ALA from n n-animal sources and ALA from meat and d iry sources were associated or suggestively ssociated with an increased risk of dvanced prostate cancer. This finding agrees w th the finding of a single pr vious study that evaluated ALA intake by f od source. EPA + DHA was s ggestively related to a lower risk of dvanced prostate cancer, which was mainly due to DHA and to a l sser extent to EPA." It is sad and d sheartening that information from prestigious medical c mmunities, globally, with study after study sh wing EPA and DHA are profoundly b neficial to a myriad of health ssues from diet-related to cognitive, is b coming obscured and blinded by food m nufacturers' hype. With their long reach and d ep pockets, the health of a n tion is on the line. And the r sult? The every-day, hard-working consumer overwhelmed w th little time to do any p rsonal in-depth research assumes all Omegas are cr ated equal. This travesty has been d tailed in a thoroughly researched and nvestigative expose, "The Food Industry's Greed: How M sleading Labeling of Omega-3 Foods Undermines Am rican Health." Learn how this began in 2004 w th the FDA Health Qualifying claim, Om ga-3 labeling violations by food manufacturers, c mplaints filed against the FDA that are b ing ignored, health warnings from prestigious m dical communities, and what you can do to pr tect your health. http://www.sea-based-health.com/omega-3-book.html
