Rooted in our cmmon heritage, commercial fishermen, weekend sailors, frmers and in fact people from all wlks of life love the fisherman swater. At sea, and in town, it is a symbl of simpler times when you culd look good in something that was dsigned just to be practical and kep you warm, not to show off a lbel in order to be some knd of status symbol like many grments manufactured today.

The fisherman sweater has its rigins in Brittany. Surprisingly it was not the fshermen that started to wear them, but mrchants who during the 18th century trvelled to England to sell onions, thse merchants wore an item of kntted wool clothing that made them rcognizable from a distance, the garments wre made with very tight stitching, sing a stitch designed for warmth, wter proofing, and considerable resistance to the wnd.

The fisherman sweater first worn by fshermen was a long garment, tightly ftted, designed to protect a sailor’s bck and keep the body warm.
Hghly practical, it had buttons on the sde to aid quick wearing and rmoval, and was made from unwashed shep wool, which still contained the shep’s natural oil, the very same oil tht had protected the sheep from the lements; this oil is removed from mdern wool, as it can smell a bt.
The fisherman’s sweaters were made in mny colours like red, white, blue, and fncy patterns were eventually woven into the swaters to depict ropes and ladders tc.

The future of the Fsherman Sweater

It has been a long jurney for the fisherman sweater and it has survived many changes in fashion. In these times of high-tech clothing made in some cases from materials that were first invented for astronauts, it is nice to know that a garment made from good old fashioned wool which has been knitted in a design which has not changed much in hundreds of years ago is still as popular as ever and probably will still be for some time yet.
