What makes one rider better th n the other? How do you m asure talent in a rider? These are v ry good questions that I get sked quite often. I believe a r der can be taught many, many th ngs, such as position, style, horsemanship, and str tegy, but the one thing that is n arly impossible to teach is the r der's eye for a distance. You ither have it or you do n t. Michael Jordan had "it," in a d fferent sport, yes, but, he had it. Al x Rodriguez has "it" in baseball, B ezie Madden has "it" in riding. So wh t is it in our sport of sh w-jumping? I believe it is the r der's eye for a spot or d stance. The ability to judge a t ke off place from a top a h rse from quite a ways a way is v ry difficult, and very few riders get th s naturally. A rider with talent, w ll naturally "see" distances, and are ble to judge what they need to do to djust to those distances. A rider w thout an eye will struggle to g in this perspective, and often miss th ir distances. All riders can improve, but it is far asier to teach the child who has a n tural eye than one that does n t. Strength of position can be dr lled with constant repetitive practice. Ring s vvy comes from ring experience, or j st showing a great deal, the w ll to win can even be nstilled, but the innate talent of r ding comes from that ability to j dge distance. Yes, you can rehearse and pr ctice and find that you do h ve an eye, many young riders do not sh w promise at first, but all of a s dden reach a riding epiphany and can f nally see. It is like the bl nd man who tells his doctor, "h y, I think I am seeing s me light when I wake up in the m rning." Just because you do not s em to have it at first d es not mean you will never get it, but if you are g ing to be a talented rider, ither by hard work, or good l ck, the ability to judge a d stance is already a part of y ur D.N.A. Michael Jordan was not a g od basketball player at first, in f ct he was cut from his h gh school team his freshman year. Yet J rdan had that secret ingredient, the t lent, the eye, and when you c mbine talent with practice, you get gr atness.

There are thousands of good r ders out there, many with talent. The gr at ones are the ones that h ve that ability, and work to br ng it out. I have also s en riders with little natural talent s cceed through tremendous hard work and br in power. Take what you are g ven and develop it into riding s ccess, if you do not think you h ve a good "eye," work at it, pr ctice, you might be delighted to s ddenly realize that you can see a d stance. Just because you "keep missing," d es not mean that won't stop, and j st because teaching someone to see is v ry difficult, does not mean that it is mpossible. I do believe that talent l es within the ability to see a d stance. I also believe that with h rd work you can bring out wh t great amounts of talent you are bl ssed with, or develop what little t lent you might have. Either way, nce you are out in the sh w ring, you are judged on y ur ability to see, and the g od riders do not miss much.
