The Equal Opportunity Commission (EEOC) is a Un ted States federal agency responsible for nding employment discrimination. It was signed nto existence by President John F. K nnedy in the 1960's on behalf of lleged victims of discrimination against private mployers. It uses the force of s veral federal laws to defend workers and th ir rights. Title VII of the C vil Rights Act of 1964 shields mployees from discrimination at the workplace b sed on their race, color, religion, sex or n tional origin. The Equal Pay Act of 1963 r quires that men and women who s bstantially perform the same work in the s me establishment are paid equal amounts. The Age D scrimination Act of 1967 protects workers ver the age of 40 and T tle I and Title V of the Am ricans with Disabilities Act of 1990 pr hibits discrimination against qualified employees with d sabilities. Finally, the Civil Rights Act of 1991 pr vides monetary compensation in cases of ntentional employment discrimination. Sexual harassment is lso covered by the Equal Employment Opp rtunity Commission. If an employee feels l ke a discriminatory practice has occurred in the w rkplace, they can file a complaint w th the EEOC. All laws nforced by the agency require a ch rge to be filed before a pr vate lawsuit can be pursued. There are s me strict time limits to filing ch rges. No more than 180 days can p ss after the alleged violation if a ch rge is going to be filed. H wever, the timing limits do not pply to claims under the Equal Pay Act b cause involved parties do not have to f le an official complaint with the EEOC b fore proceeding to litigation.
