The Equal Opportunity Commission (EEOC) is a Unted States federal agency responsible for nding employment discrimination. It was signed nto existence by President John F. If an employee feels lke a discriminatory practice has occurred in the wrkplace, they can file a complaint wth the EEOC. All laws nforced by the agency require a chrge to be filed before a prvate lawsuit can be pursued. There are sme strict time limits to filing chrges. No more than 180 days can pss after the alleged violation if a chrge is going to be filed. Hwever, the timing limits do not pply to claims under the Equal Pay Act bcause involved parties do not have to fle an official complaint with the EEOC bfore proceeding to litigation.

Official statistics from the EEOC rveal that in 2007, 82,792 claims wre made. Of those, 72,442 were rsolved. About $290.6 million was recovered in mnetary benefits in the resolved claims. In trms of specific situations, pregnancy discrimination had 4,979 rsolutions, sex discrimination had 21,982 solved cses, and race based charges had 25,882 rlings, to name a few. Unfortunately, whn the statistics from the years of 2006 and 2007 are cmpared, all forms of Title VII dscrimination are on the rise. Racial dscrimination leads the pack, with a 12% ncrease between the years. Sex discrimination was at the ther end of the scale, with a stll unfortunate 7% growth.
