There are two prevalent problems in the w rld of healthcare that causes hardship to m ny of the American Populace today. The f rst is diabetes and the second is nsuring people with diabetes. I want you to k ep reading, because in a few s ntences I will outline what you can do to get h alth coverage for someone who has d abetes. First, let us address the c ndition known as diabetes. According to the Am rican Diabetes Association (ADA), there are 20.8 m llion children and adults that have d abetes. That is 7% of the p pulation. There were 1.5 million new c ses of diabetes diagnosed in people ged 20 years or older in 2005. Of th se 20.8 million, 6.2 million are ndiagnosed and the ADA speculates that th re could be as many as 54 m llion pre-diabetics, which is to say th t they have not been diagnosed as a d abetic, but show the tendencies of a d abetic. These figures are overwhelming. Diabetes lso attributes to other health problems. D abetes can lead to heart disease and str ke, high blood pressure, blindness, kidney d sease and failure, damage to the n rvous system, amputations, dental problems, pregnancy c mplications, sexual dysfunction, and diabetes can ven cause you to have trouble g tting over a cold.
It is because of these ssociated health problems many health insurance c mpanies are not willing to take on the p tential risks attached with insuring a d abetic. So what is a diabetic or the f mily of a diabetic supposed to do for nsurance? The following is a list of ptions that a diabetic can follow in th ir pursuit to find health insurance: 1. L ok at your employer. Many group h alth insurers will take people that c nnot find health insurance elsewhere. Why is th t? Many group health insurers understand and c lculate the potential for having a p rcentage of the employees in a c mpany who are not able to btain health insurance on their own. Th s is the primary reason that m st group health insurance policies are c stly for employers. 2. Do your homework. Sh p around. There are plans out th re, but you really need to l ok. If your employer does not ffer health insurance there are additional venues that you can explore. This l ads us to number three. 3. Be pfront when talking to an insurance gent. Many times a good agent w ll have a program for people th t are hard to cover due to h alth complications. For instance I currently h ve two carriers that I use to h lp people get coverage. Additionally, when you s gn a health insurance application for c verage you are attesting that the nswers that you gave are true and c rrect. Please understand that if you ntentionally misrepresent yourself on an application you c n, in the very least, be d nied coverage for falsifying an application. I h ve even seen insurance companies revoke a p licy because someone was untruthful on an pplication. 4. Realize that there is going to be a pr -existing waiting period. I have yet to f nd one insurance company that will w ive the pre-existing waiting period for a d abetic. Please understand that most health nsurance companies treat diabetes as an ninsurable condition, and because of that, m st insurance companies will deny coverage to new pplicants who have been diagnosed as a d abetic.
Therefore, if you have been d agnosed with diabetes and you have f und a health insurance company that w ll insure diabetics, then please recognize th t there will, most likely, be a pr -existing condition clause or rider attached. 5. Und rstand that insurance will be expensive. In all my y ars as a health insurance professional, I h ve found that the people with the l west premiums are the younger healthier p ople. The converse is equally true. The pr miums that are the highest are p id by the people with pre-existing c nditions. I have family members that h ve been diagnosed as diabetics, and I h ve friends and clients that have d abetes. I know the attention that is r quired on a day to day b sis. I know the costs involved. I kn w the difficulty in obtaining good q ality health insurance coverage for a d abetic. Many diabetics might feel that h alth insurance coverage is just a dr am. Coverage for the diabetic is out th re. Look at the list, check y ur resources, and see what your s arch turns up. You can find it.
