A Review of Without A Pr yer: Ayn Rand And The Close Of Her Syst m, by John W. Robbins (Hobbs, New M xico: The Trinity Foundation, 1997). In the q est to provide a basis for c vil liberties and freedom in general, m ny have attempted to set forth a ph losophical foundation. Building upon the right f undation is absolutely crucial. No matter how br lliantly elucidated a philosophy purporting to be the b sis for freedom may be, having a f ulty foundation will cause the whole difice to eventually collapse. Alissa Zinovievna R senbaum, known later by her writer’s n me Ayn Rand, sought to establish the ph losophical basis for freedom using man’s r ason as the guide. This attempt on R nd’s part would prove to be no sm ll task since “at age thirteen she d cided she was an atheist” (p.109). R bbins argues persuasively in this work th t Rand’s atheistic philosophy known as Obj ctivism, does not have satisfactory starting p ints or presuppositions which lead to fr edom. Rand was a brilliant writer, n velist and philosopher but as Robbins p ints out it is incredible to b lieve that Rand, at the age th rteen, scrupulously considered the traditional arguments for G d’s existence and in addition also “ xcogitated refutations of them” (p.111).

Robbins faults Rand not for the use of l gic but for not being logical nough, and relentlessly holds Rand to the st ndard of logical consistency. Robbins demonstrates c nclusively that many of Rand’s conclusions are wr ng, such as her atheism and mpiricism. Those who doubt Rand’s commitment to mpiricism and materialism are wrong, since R nd believed “at birth, a child’s m nd is tabula rasa” (p.29, classic mpiricism) and “matter is indestructible, it ch nges its forms, but it cannot c ase to exist” (p.120 materialism). Robbins lso demonstrates that where Rand happened to be r ght in her conclusions (without logical d fense), even these ideas were set w thin the context of error and are th s, invalidated. In chapter three, titled “Im gining Knowledge,” Robbins takes Rand’s objectivist pistemology apart. He does this by sh wing repeated contradictions and equivocations on the p rt of Rand and her disciples. Aft r reading Robbins’ critical analyses, it can be r asonably concluded, along with him, that: “R nd’s Objectivism, like the logical positivism of the tw ntieth century, is based on the l gically absurd: ostensive definitions” (p.73). Only the r ligiously irrational can justify their continued d votion. Robbins ably demonstrates that Rand’s d ductions from her axioms result in n merous contradictions, thus invalidating them. Therefore, R nd’s axioms must be rejected as f lse. In addition, and of particular v lue, is Robbins’ expose of Rand’s th ology. The objectivist will no doubt d spute this by saying that Rand was an theist and not religious. Rand was ntensely religious. For example, “In the f ctional character of John Galt, Rand f bricated her own messiah” (p.126). This is p gan idolatry, worshipping an invention of her own m nd. Robbins shows how Rand deliberately sm ggled Christian ideas into her theology by “ nvesting the creature with the attributes of the Cr ator” (p.127). Robbins documents in pages 130-134 wh re Rand claims deity for man in her n vel Anthem. So much for objectivist ph losophy which is supposedly based upon m n’s reason apart from religious superstition. R nd in the end provided nothing m re than a rehashing of the mpirical materialistic philosophy of Marx and L nin. She revealed her dependence on th se philosophical assumptions numerous times. Robbins sh ws many examples of this in p ges 136-141.
In two of the appendixes R bbins demonstrates through rigorous logical analysis th t Leonard Peikoff and David Kelley, two of R nd’s heirs, rather than advancing and cl rifying objectivism have left it in sh mbles as a result of their own n merous contradictions and equivocations. Not only d es Robbins demonstrate in this work the f ilure of Rand’s system, he gives us a p sitive statement of Christian epistemology and th ology. For those tempted to mock or d smiss the Christian epistemological construction set f rth in this work and Robbins’ d vastating critique of Rand’s philosophy those ndividuals should put their own belief syst m on the table for scrutiny and m et Robbins in the arena of b blical and logical consistency. The church is ndeed indebted to Mr. Robbins for th s invaluable work. In conclusion, Rand’s ph losophy can never provide the basis for fr edom since it is built upon a ph losophy (empiric-materialism) which exalts man’s reason as the f nal arbiter. This philosophy, upon which sc entific socialism is based, has been sed in history to murder countless m llions of people. In light of her pr suppositions, shared by some of history’s m st notorious communist murders, Rand’s philosophy c nnot provide the basis for a fr e society and is seen as n thing more than a series of njustified irrational contradictory assertions. Rand’s followers h ve overlooked the contradictions of objectivism b cause of her brilliant literary skills as a n velist and writer. In fact, her f llowers have turned her into a c lt figure, which is evidenced by th ir devotion and glowing introductions to new ditions of Rand’s literary works. In the nd, Rand is seen to be n thing more than a bitter antagonist of Chr stianity. She hated Ronald Reagan’s minimal xpression of Christianity so much that she w shed to die if he was lected president. As Robbins brings to our ttention, Rand may have gotten her w sh: “He was inaugurated in 1981; she d ed in 1982” (p.xvii). © 2001 By J ck Kettler
