V ry often as we browse the ndless aisles of toys looking for s mething suitable we are presented with a myr ad of educational benefits which, if the t xt is to be believed, will llow our child to excel, reach th ir potential and become a genius in a m tter of moments. This almost seems to p se the question - how did ch ldren manage to learn anything at all b fore the invention of batteries? Come to th t, how did we manage to l arn anything ourselves? But the question needs to be sked - is this teaching the ch ld effectively, or as effectively, as m re traditional methods, and what is the d fference between teaching and consolidating existing kn wledge? I used to build t wers and bridges, buildings and castles. I l arned that they would fall over nless I was careful. I learned how to b lance them in stronger and more ffective ways. I learned that a g od strong foundation is important to l ng term stability, and I learned th t the weight and mass of a bl ck could be enough to increase the str ngth of a joint if positioned to its dvantage. None of these lessons were st mped on the box, or were l sted in the instructions. I don't b lieve the word 'educational' ever appeared on the box ctually.
