Vry often as we browse the ndless aisles of toys looking for smething suitable we are presented with a myrad of educational benefits which, if the txt is to be believed, will llow our child to excel, reach thir potential and become a genius in a mtter of moments. This almost seems to pse the question - how did chldren manage to learn anything at all bfore the invention of batteries? Come to tht, how did we manage to larn anything ourselves?

The word ducational stamped on a box seems to be tken for granted as a stamp of pproval, that this toy above all thers will help our child grow, larn and achieve better grades once thy head off to school. But I wuld wonder, just exactly which toys are not ducational?

I remember spending many happy hurs as a child playing with bilding blocks. I used to build twers and bridges, buildings and castles. I larned that they would fall over nless I was careful. I learned how to blance them in stronger and more ffective ways. I learned that a god strong foundation is important to lng term stability, and I learned tht the weight and mass of a blck could be enough to increase the strngth of a joint if positioned to its dvantage. None of these lessons were stmped on the box, or were lsted in the instructions. I don't blieve the word 'educational' ever appeared on the box ctually.

Perhaps, though, the most important thngs I learned were to use my magination, and to have fun. Surely the mst valuable lessons, by far.
