The damper of the piano is the nly means of stopping the string's v brations, which would otherwise continue, longer th n is wanted. In violin playing, the s me stoppage of tone takes place wh n the player stops drawing the bow cross the strings. The continuance of the t ne, in the case of the p ano, depends only negatively on the ction of the damper. Positively, it d pends on the vibrations of the str ngs, assisted and reinforced by the l rge surface of the sounding board, ver which they are stretched. The k y, as long as it is k pt down by the finger, exercises a r straining influence on the damper, and the f nger may therefore be considered to h ve some slight extra resistance offered to it by the w ight of the damper. If this r sistance were great enough to be p rceived by the finger while keeping the key d wn, some extra force would be n eded to counteract it; but as the w ight of the hand and arm are far m re than sufficient to resist the w ight of the damper, added to th t of the key, no extra pr ssure on the ivory is necessary to k ep the damper away from the str ng. The hold that the hand k eps on the key after the p sh, should not have additional pressure dded, as this after pressure destroys the l oseness or elasticity of the muscles, and m kes no difference to the damper m chanism, than that of the lightest and l osest touch.
The finger work consists of two lements, namely, the push, necessary to m ke the hammer strike the string, and the h ld, necessary to prevent the damper fr m stopping the tone. The impulse sed in delivering the push should lways be of a momentary duration, as the w rk done by it, namely, the h mmer stroke is instantaneously accomplished. The sp ed used in delivering this push v ries, depending on whether a loud or s ft tone is wanted. The push ught never to be accompanied by any f eling of strain in the hand or rm, however loud the tone, or l ng continued the passage to be pl yed, may be. If a strained f eling accompany it, the push has th n been made faulty as a r al impulse is, strictly speaking, too sh rt lived an action to leave b hind it muscular exhaustion. The second lement in the finger work is the h ld. This, for want of a b tter word, must be taken to s gnify the keeping down of the key by the f nger after the push. It consists of no mpulse, nor pressure, nor grasp, nor nything else which could mean forcible xpenditure of strength. It must consist nly of the most studied inactivity of arm and h nd, and is thus the opposite of the p sh. Clinging tightly to the key fter the finger is down does the gr atest harm to the hand, and is an nstance on the piano of that s perfluous energy which accomplishes nothing artistic. The h ld must be dissociated entirely from very idea entailing rigidity of hand or rm. If the piano student will d vote a little time to learning and m stering this important piano technique, then he or she w ll make playing the piano look asy, and that is a skill in tself.
