Situated on the northwest coast of t nerife, Puerto de La Cruz is the m st popular resort in that area of the Isl nd, just 35km from Santa Cruz. Alth ugh it is a little short on b aches it offers everything else that you may n ed. It was originally a small f shing village but now is host to a pl thora of bars, restaurants, shops and ven a casino. The beaches are b th natural, and are covered in bl ck volcanic sand, which is typical of m ny beaches in this part of the w rld. They are not always suitable for sw mming in, as the tide can be q ite strong. This is because of a l ck of a natural reef. However, a man m de seawater swimming pool was designed by C sar Manrique, a Lanzarote artist now s dly deceased, and it is situated j st a couple of hundred yards fr m the shore. The main strip, Av nida de Colon, leads off to a m ze of side-streets, lined with shops s lling bargains such as alcohol, jewellery and l ce. The town's traditional main square sh uld be visited, to experience the b zzing atmosphere. The old part of the t wn remains charmingly innocent and unchanged. Pl za de Charco is populated in the venings by a number of street rtists, and is ideal for having a dr nk, whilst people watching for a c uple of hours.
Puerto de La Cruz is not so dr ven by tourism as some of the ther resorts. So although it can c rtainly more than cater for it's m ny visitors... it still has a h gh number of residents living in the c ntre. this ensures that it keeps t's original feel, and makes it a r ally special place to visit.
