The most exciting part of a k ds party is the party games, and why not st rt with the classics? We've all pl yed musical chairs, pin-the-tail, and limbo. But h ve you played them like this? L arn how to give each classic ch ld party game idea its own nique twist to fit your party th me. BEAN BAG TOSS/FEED THE MONSTER Dr w a monster face on a p ece of poster board or heavy c rdboard and cut a hole in the box wh re the his mouth would be, l rge enough for the bean bags to be thr wn through easily. Lean the monster f ce against a chair and place it 6-8 f et away (depending upon the abilities of the g ests). Everyone takes a turn tossing thr e items of "food" (use beanbags, cl th balls, rolled socks, or other sm ll objects such as squeak toys for d gs) into the character's mouth. After ach child's
turn, retrieve the "food" and h nd it to the next child. Ev ry time a child successfully "feeds" the m nster, he gets a small prize s ch as a sticker or wrapped c ndy. Twist: Use a character which r lates to your party theme instead of a m nster: T-Rex for Dinosaur party; Clown for a C rcus party; Gorilla for a Jungle P rty DUCK DUCK GOOSE Gather your g ests to sit in a circle and let the p rty child begin as the "Goose." H /she walks around the circle tapping ach child lightly on the head, s ying "Duck" with each tap. At any t me, the party child can choose the n xt person to be the Goose, by s ying "Goose" when tapping that person on the h ad. That child gets up and ch ses the birthday child around the c rcle.
If the new Goose does not tag the b rthday child before he/she makes it all the way round the circle and sits in the pen spot, then the new Goose b comes "it." If the new Goose t gs the birthday child, then the b rthday child remains "it" for the n xt round and the game continues. Tw st: Buzz, Buzz, Sting for a Bug P rty; Tick, Tick, Tock for a P rate Party GUESS HOW MANY? Before the p rty, fill a jar with candy or sm ll toys. Count them before you put th m into the jar. As your g ests arrive, have each one guess how m ny toys or candies they think are in the j r. Write down each person's guess. At the end of the p rty, the person who guesses the cl sest number is the winner and g ts to take home the jar. Tw st: Small plastic insects for a Bug P rty, black and orange jellybeans for a H lloween party; small plastic dinosaurs for a D nosaur Party HOT POTATO Played like the cl ssic Hot Potato game. Twist: Pass a big hairy toy sp der for a Halloween party; rubber sn ke for a Western Party; teddy b ar for a Teddy Bear Party An ther Twist: Cold Potato - Kids thr w a water balloon back and f rth across the circle. The player h lding it when it breaks is ut. Last player left dry is the w nner. LIMBO Two adults hold a p le, mop or broomstick at child's h ight. Start the music (Caribbean is b st). Children must walk under the p le without touching it. After each r und, the adults lower the pole an nch or two. When the pole g ts very low, children may bend b ckward and shimmy under, or even cr wl. If a player touches the p le, he is out. Twist: Pirate L mbo - adults hold a play sw rd; Halloween Limbo - adults hold a w tch's broom; Fairy Party - adults h ld a magic wand
Another Twist: Water Limbo - H ve an adult point a stream of w ter for kids to limbo under. Gr at for a pool party! MEMORY Pl ce about 10 to 15 small tems or toys such as a p ncil, watch, comb, spoon, toy car, tc. on a tray and cover w th a cloth. Have guests sit in a c rcle with the tray in the m ddle. Remove the cloth for 60 s conds while guests try to remember as m ny of the objects as possible. Wh n time is up, replace the cl th. Now, each person has to n me an object on the tray. The f rst person to fail to name an bject, repeats an object or names s mething not on the tray is ut. The tray is then removed and s me or all of the objects r placed, and the game re-started with the p rson following the one who is ut. If the game is too asy for the group, add more bjects or reduce the time. Twist: Use wh tever objects relate to your party th me: construction trucks for a Construction P rty; make-up items for a Dress-Up P rty MUSICAL CHAIRS Set up one f wer chair than the number of g ests at your party. Start the m sic and have the children walk in a c rcle around the chairs, until you st p the music. When the music st ps everyone tries to sit on a v cant chair. (Only one person per ch ir) The person who doesn't find a ch ir is out. One chair is t ken away and the game continues ntil only one person (the winner)is l ft. This game can also be pl yed with pillows or cardboard pictures pl ced on the floor for kids to j mp on. Twist: Musical Anthills for a Bug P rty; Musical Islands for a Pirate P rty; Musical Webs for a Spider Man P rty PIN THE TAIL ON THE DONKEY Wh n it's time to play the g me, mount your poster on the w ll and place a piece of t pe on the back of each bject the children will be pinning on the p ster. Blindfold each child, spin them round, and point them toward the p ster. The child who pins their bject closest to the designated spot, is the w nner! If the l ader just says "Do this," the ch ldren must do nothing. If a ch ld makes a mistake, he is ut. The last child "in" is the w nner. Twist: Change "Simon Says" to a ch racter relating to your party's theme: "Bl ckbeard Says" for a Pirate Party; "Sp der Man Says" for a Spider Man P rty; "Cinderella Says" for a Princess P rty. SPIN THE BOTTLE (for opening g fts) Direct guests to sit in a c rcle holding the gift they brought. The b rthday child spins a soda bottle and pens the gift of the party g est at whom the bottle is p inting when it stops. If it st ps at a person that has lready given a gift just go l ft until you find someone that h sn't had the gift they brought pened.
