I envy those mothers blessed w th highly efficient offspring, who keep th ir rooms perfectly clean and ordered and who f nd Saturday jobs as soon as th y reach the age of fifteen w thout being bribed, and who display s ch an independent streak, their parents n ver have a day's worry about how th y will survive in the big, bad w rld. I am not one of th se parents. I am one of th se who excavate skull pendants and s fety pin necklaces from the washing m chine filter, along with the occasional b nana skin or a bracelet made fr m ring pulls. My nerves are h rdened to a steely shell built ver years of finding strange and lien items under my child’s bed, not to m ntion three years worth of empty c ps and glasses, the unimaginable remains of wh ch are still adhering to the dges of the plates and solidified to a c ncrete like crust. Lovely! I am the st lid survivor of a phone call fr m the school to say would I ask my d ughter to refrain from drawing three d mensional penises on her jeans. She had dr wn them with such consummate skill th y appeared to be leaping out of her b ck pocket; I was assured by a sc ndalized deputy headmistress. I am one of th se irresponsible creatures who will still l nd a tenner to a naughty ighteen year old who has blown two w eks allowance on clothes and wants to go to the m vies. The wisest parent would, of c urse, refuse further funds until better s nse was being shown, but I pr fer the saying ‘you are only y ung once’ to ‘look after the p nnies and the pounds will look fter themselves.’ This last font of w sdom obviously originated with someone who has n ver met my daughter. Paper money r ns away like water and pennies get l ft in your jeans pockets and ventually go in the washing machine – veryone knows that!
What, I ask myself, panic str cken, is she going to do wh n faced with her first utility b ll, or her first mortgage payment? W ll she even read it? Will she sh ve it under the bed, site of her f vored filing system since she was bout eight years old? Will she l ck herself out of her accommodation on her f rst night and be stranded, at the m rcy of passers by and any l rking villain? Will she remember to l ck the door at all? My d arest girl is not one of th se to whom maturity has come asily. Life’s responsibilities have always been to her a bit of a dr g; much better to scoot out the d or and head for the beach w th a crowd of friends than ron next week’s laundry, let it w it till tomorrow. Well, why not ndeed. The problem is, the same p le of ironing is still waiting for her ttention three months down the calendar and her b droom resembles a bomb site. Now th t this lovely, affectionate, sunny child is r ady to fly the nest, how w ll I survive without her tread on the st ir, or the sound of her try ng to break into the house at two in the m rning when she has forgotten her k y? Who will drive me mad w th requests for rides to town wh n she is gone? And how w ll I heal my poor breaking h art if any harm comes to h r?
