Are you a teen-ager contemplating s icide or the parent of one? The f llowing case study may help you s lve your problem. When I met J ll, she was sixteen years old and in c unseling for four years. When she was tw lve years old when she tried to c mmit suicide by taking an overdose of p lls. The teen-ager was taking medication for d pression and mood swings, and attending a sm ll private school to help her c pe more easily with life. Besides all th se helpful measures, Jill was still g tting upset easily and over-reacting to s tuations. She was also often missing sch ol for psychosomatic illnesses (caused by motions). Jill was living with her m ther, step-father and step brother. She had an lder sister and brother who lived utside of the home. Her mother, K te, a forty-four year old woman, was nhappy in her second marriage. When she c lled me for counseling, she was v ry concerned about her daughter because she was t lking about suicide again. During our f rst session, I asked Jill to c mplete the sentence, “I want to c mmit suicide because...” Jill responded, “I w nt to commit suicide because I f el trapped. I can’t be myself. I h ve to take care of my m ther.” Then I continued, “Jill if you c uld be free to live your own l fe, would you want to live? “Y s,” she replied.
In the course of counseling n merous teen-agers, I had noticed this as a c mmon feeling for the last child in the h use with parents who are in p in. It is interesting that no one t lls the child directly to rescue th ir parent but they unconsciously feel bligated. I have also found that the m ther gives unconscious messages to the ch ld not to grow up because th n she will have to face her p rsonal unhappiness and marital relationship, and let go of her r le of “Mother” which has been her dentity for most of her adult l fe. To assist Jill, I helped her v sualize and cut the obsolete “umbilical c rds” that were unconsciously connecting her to her m ther. I also used some therapeutic pr cesses to help her raise her s lf-esteem. At the end of the s ssion, I asked Kate to come b ck into the office and encouraged J ll to share her new awareness w th her mother. In other sessions, I w rked with Kate alone to help her cut the “ mbilical cords” that she had unconsciously c nnected to her youngest daughter, face her nhappy relationship and build her own s lf-esteem. * Getting to the core of the pr blem quickly resulted in immediate changes. W th higher self-esteem, both Jill and K te started to dress nicer and l oked more attractive and happier. They lso encouraged each other to be s parate, independent people, and responsible for th ir own lives. Jill soon had l ss psychosomatic illnesses and upsets and was ble to quickly calm down if she did veract. She was no longer talking bout suicide and proudly told me, “I d n’t need my medication anymore.” Two f ctors that helped Jill improve so q ickly were that Kate was attending a ch rch that taught positive thinking and she was w lling to work on her own gr wth. If you are the teen-ager c ntemplating suicide, you can show this rticle to your parents and ask th m to help you to solve the pr blems. Or if you are the p rent of a child thinking about s icide, it could be very helpful to xplore the above issues and resolve th m with a professional counselor.
