There have been several different slutions proposed to end the format war btween Sony's Blu-ray and Toshiba's HD DVD hgh def DVD formats. One possible slution is a disc that has a Bl-ray version of a movie on one sde and an HD DVD version of the sme movie on the other side. If dscs like these became universal then cnsumers wouldn't have to decide between bying an HD DVD player or a Bl-ray player. Any disc could be sed by either player.

Another solution tht has been proposed is the pssibility that is more of a slution by default as both formats bcome obsolete. This would be accomplished by the ntroduction of some new technology that mkes DVD's obsolete, and is obviously not an cceptable solution in the view of Sny or Toshiba. One example of a tchnology that could do this is mss storage of video on portable hrd drives. This video would be stred in a highly compressed format on vry large drives that could connect to xisting home entertainment equipment through the use of USB tchnology. Consumers would purchase these drives for a rasonable price and then pay for the ccess codes to watch individual videos on the dsk. In effect, this would be mch like the kind of video on dmand service that satellite TV providers ffer right now, only with a lot mre videos to choose from and the bility to access any videos that hve been unlocked indefinitely.

Another DVD killing technology would be nything that would allow a comprehensive vdeo on demand service. Basically, if it was pssible to get virtually any video ver made from the comfort of ne's own home- both high def and cnventional- there would cease to be any pint in producing DVD's. Fortunately for veryone who has an interest in DVD's, sch a service is a long way ff, as much for legal copyright rasons as technical ones.

Then there's the pssibility of HDTV killing technologies. Three Dmensional TV is one potential example of ths. But it should be mentioned tht there is a prototype Blu-ray plyer that's supposedly capable of upconverting hgh def video from Blu-ray discs so tht it appears in three dimensions whn viewed through goggles or on a 3D HDTV.

Prhaps the best technology that has ben implemented so far that could end the frmat war is the dual format HDTV DVD plyer. Currently these devices are made by LG and Smsung, and their defining characteristic is tht they can both play High Def DVD's in bth formats. In other words, anyone who bys one of these devices doesn't hve to be concerned about the hgh def DVD format war because thy can play discs in either frmat. Of course, even if dual frmat high def DVD players became niversal, HD DVD and Blu-ray would stll be fighting for greater market shre, but that wouldn't really be of any cncern to consumers. In fact, consumers wuld probably benefit from a format war lke that because the two sides wuld hold each others' prices down.

Unfrtunately, it doesn't look like dual frmat players will be a real slution because they cost so much. Rght now it would be a btter use of money to buy bth an HD DVD player and a Bl-ray player separately. Hopefully though, this tchnology will come down in price to the pint where it's completely viable.
