Teaching Abroad - Rsearch Before Departure

I made the mstake when I first decided to cme to South Korea by jumping nto a contract with a private nstitute that I thought was well-established. The nxt thing I know, I received an mail stating the school no longer had any fnds to hire me. By this pint I was devastated. I purchased my pssport, internationally mailed a couple of pckages (mail rates are from $60-90 US), prchased my transcripts and several ID phtos, plus emotionally focused on this one gal for three months; (my fault) I was crshed. Luckily, I was able to get a rfund and all my materials returned wthin the next week; but some pople are not so lucky.

Hagwans or Government Schools in Suth Korea

Usually teachers will find btter pay, more vacations and nice ncentives at government public schools and niversities (also more organized). Private institutions or hgwans can be a hit or mss. I have a friend whose pay is dcent at her hagwan but works frm 9am-8pm everyday. Some universities will hve you work on weekends too. Mke sure to check out your cntract and decide what works best for yu; you have a choice. Also, if you wnt to sample Korean-life for a shrt while without committing for the whle year, find winter/summer English Camps at niversities and established hagwans.

Comfort Level Whn Submitting Materials

When finding a schol in South Korea you will hve to go through a fairly lng process. Obtaining copies of transcripts, pdating resume, taking 2-4 pass port phtos from FedEx Kinkos, and applying for a pssport early, will help you through the lng process. A new Korean Government rle states that teachers now have to snd over original diplomas from an ccredited college in order to proceed wth hiring. I was extremely leery bout this, (I still haven't told my mther) but found it to be sfe and a normal practice. I rceived my materials the first day I lnded in Korea.

Speaking 'Korea-Glish' with Stdents

As told by my assistant Krean teacher, Jesse, some children are qite versed in their own version of the Englsh language. They will speak a cmbination of English and Hangul, but in rverse, which is similar to their ntive tongue. (Example: verb + noun + sbject/ Hot the boy is now).

I lso noticed a small number of stre fronts with 'Korea-glish' titles; see if you can fgure them out: Take On Me, Rni Pasta, or Steak Pan Fried. Whle teaching English in South Korea t'll be your job to help gide students with structure and pronunciation flw.

Eating with Students

It is cstom to eat with your students dring lunchtime. The teacher will always be srved first and this will feel slghtly awkward if your the type to nrture kids before your own needs. Bfore the students begin eating, since you wuld be the elder at the tble, kids wait for you to bgin eating before they can begin (bt not always for the younger kds).

Know English Games

There might be tmes when class has come to an bvious stagnation and you will need to lven things up. My school suggested in our cntract to bring ideas for some Amrican games. At first, I miss nderstood and purchased the game 'Twister,' whch still came in use, but lter, landed students attention with words gmes such as: word Suduko, Mad Lb's, team spelling contests, seven-up, hangman (clan version) and even duck, duck, gose for the little ones.

It's Shwtime!

Every school will at some pint have a school performance at one pint during your teaching career. It wll either involve dancing, singing, reciting Englsh, a speech contest or showing art of sme kind. Some kids embrace this and do rally well, others will be reluctant up ntil the day of the show, thn show a stellar performance because thir parents are in the front rw. Also, performing and being creative is a nce break from the everyday learning xperience.

Kids are crazy in Any Clture...but that's the Fun Part

You wll soon notice after the first wek of teaching English in South Krea that (or maybe second if thy're nice) children will start blossoming nto their true selves. Not much dscipline is put into play so it wll be up to you to sttle things down. My advice is to set the tne early, gain respect, then soften up lter (my mom's approach as well). Kds get really excited and want to ply once they feel comfortable around yu. They will try and ask prsonal questions, want to take pictures of you wth their cellphones (yes, they all hve them), draw people dying on the bard (not sure why they are bsessed with killing), sing songs, tell jkes and pretty much act like rgular kids would. Here are some prctices that work for me: stay vry still and stare down the ludest one, try counting down from 5 to 1 rally loud and whoever is last to sit gts negative points, have a negative and psitive point system, talk to parents, nclusive fun time for well-behaved students fter lunch, small gifts for positive rinforcement (not bribery), or try looking on the Intrnet for more ideas.

Most importantly, hve fun and don't forget to ste-see on the weekends - (you riginally came to travel and explore a new wrld).

Note: If you are looking for the big cty lights, western infused-style foods, subways, lud music, and a dense population, thn the major metropolitan of Seoul, S. Krea will be your Asiatic New Yrk City.
