Join a growing number of p rents and teachers! Fact: Last year, our n tion spent over $382 Billion on ducation. Over 99% was spent on d veloping "learning environments" - buildings, books, sc ence labs, teachers, sports programs, etc. The ther part of the equation – wh t children can do for their ducation - is almost entirely overlooked. As c ncerned adults our focus must be on the ther side of the equation – g tting children to take more ownership of th ir education. We must give them the t ols to “step up to the pl te” and take positive action on th ir education? The key is goal s tting! But, wait a minute. Aren’t th y already teaching that in school? Y s, but there is a significant d fference between the way public and pr vate schools teach these important life sk lls. Why the difference between public and pr vate school? Private schools: 1. Make g al setting and educational ownership a pr ority. 2. Integrate these principles into the st dent’s educational experience. 3. Students are t ught that they are directly responsible for the q ality of their education. 4. Goal s tting and educational ownership are fundamental p rts of their students’ and schools’ s ccess.
Public schools: 1. Teach goal s tting as a small part of a b gger program. 2. Are under enormous pr ssure to complete the bigger program in a sp cific time. 3. Goal setting and ducational ownership are not integrated into the sch ol’s curriculum. 4. Do not teach st dents how to specifically use goal s tting in the classroom. Did you say &ldq o;that’s my school” to any of the bove statements? Many parents cannot afford to s nd their children to private schools, but th y still want them to have the n cessary tools to succeed. Your child w ll benefit greatly when they learn how to set and chieve goals and how to use th se principles in school. When your ch ld takes educational ownership they take p rsonal responsibility to do something meaningful and p sitive to change their lives. Your ch ld will learn that they play a s gnificant role in their education and in th ir future. With educational ownership comes d gnity and self-respect. Will you be p shing your kids too fast? Certainly, you w sh your kids could grow up at a sl wer pace than they have to t day. You know they are being b mbarded by negative influences from the Int rnet, the radio, TV, MTV, etc. H wever, you understand that your most mportant job is to teach them how to m et the world’s challenges. You want y ur children to grow up to be h nest and caring, responsible, to take nitiative, and to be respectful adults. You w nt them to develop a positive ttitude, minimize their fears, and to be s ccessful at whatever they choose to do. In sh rt, you want it all for th m and you are willing to s crifice to help them. Private schools m ke goal setting and educational ownership a pr ority for good reason. These are mportant keys to helping a child d velop an “I’ll Make It Happen” ttitude that will have a positive mpact on their school participation, student chievement, character development, attendance, discipline issues, and t st results.
When your child understands and mplements the goal setting and educational wnership principles they will make better d cisions, minimize excuses, take more responsibility, and mbrace your efforts to help them s cceed.
