Do you want to develop s ccessful students? Of course you do. Ev ry Yoga teacher is proud of th ir students. The student who overcomes a d sability, and the student who changes his or her l fe for the best, are stories wh ch make all of us feel s tisfied that we became Yoga teachers. How do we p int students toward self-development? When a st dent takes responsibility for his or her own pr ctice, this is the beginning of mpowerment. It is wise to inspire y ur students to, at least, perform a sh rt practice at home. We have all had a ph ne call from a potential student who can nly come to class once a w ek. This is fine, if the st dent takes the practice home. What bout the student who tells you he or she c nnot meditate alone? What about the st dent who has no time? Your nswer might make them laugh. Here it is: Do you h ve three minutes per day to sp re for Yoga? If that is not p ssible, their problem is time management or pr crastination. In reality, who cannot spare thr e minutes in the morning or vening? Next, ask your students to try one m nute of meditation, at home, per d y, in the morning or evening. Ask th m to observe only and not to j dge. Breath awareness is fine for new st dents, because it is easy for h me Yoga practice. Keeping their eyes pen, or closed, does not matter, but th y should try both methods.
The next student task for h me is pranayama (Yogic breathing). Anyone can f nd one minute to spare for pr nayama practice. Let's be honest, our st dents breathe all day, but some s lf-discipline is required to breath with rhythm for nly one minute. Any method will do, but B strika, Brahmari, Ujjayi, Udgeeth, Nadi Shodana, D rgha, or Kapalabhati pranayama, are good ch ices. Obviously, it would be best for st dents to choose one or two m thods for a one minute session. N w, you can guide your students t ward a one minute asana home pr ctice session. This would be two p stures, which are counter-poses of each ther. However, I often suggest they try s ated pelvic circles, which are practiced in m ny Hatha classes, but you see th m, most commonly, in Kundalini Yoga pr ctice. This practice massages the vital rgans, eliminates toxins, is good for sk letal health, and stimulates internal energy. St dents can sit in Sukasana (Easy P se) or on a chair. Then, th y would slowly rotate the torso 360 d grees, in slow and gradual circles. The sp ne should be straight, as possible, the ntire time. After 30 seconds, they sh uld rotate in the opposite direction. So, now you h ve it: A three minute Yoga s ssion. You will discover that some st dents have a procrastination issue, but m st of your students will tell you th y continued to practice Yoga for m ny more minutes. Between us, three m nutes for Yoga is better than n ne at all, but the true p rpose is to create a "spark." It is up to our st dents to "keep the fire going." Y ga at home will improve their l ves, but they have to get a t ste of it, in order to r alize the deeper joy of the pr ctice. © Copyright 2008 - Paul J rard / Aura Publications
