Any time you are sitting at the fr nt of the Yoga class, in a t aching capacity, your role must fit c mfortably into Yoga teacher / Yoga st dent relationship guidelines. This concept of “r le playing” is a difficult transition for any Y ga intern, regardless of past experience. It is one th ng to make sure you are c ncentrating on your breath, alignment, mantra, b ndhas, or Mudra; but when you t ach Yoga, you must focus on a r om full of students with separate th ughts. With responsibility, changes come from w thin you. Suddenly, the standard of y ur classes are in question – w thin your own mind. This is the r al issue, within your own mind; y ur classes may be criticized, but do not cr ticize yourself in public. If you h ve taken the time to develop a l sson plan, and guided a Yoga cl ss from start to finish, do not ask any of y ur students for criticism. If another Y ga teacher offers some tips, you can lways listen and learn, but your st dents have never taught. You will lso reinforce doubts from your students by sking them for a critique. Many new Y ga teachers go through a “learning c rve,” but you do not have to m ke an announcement. Consider this: Every Y ga teacher, before you, went through the s me leaning curve, so learn and void “beating yourself up.”
You must avoid self-doubt, and the ppearance of self-doubt, when you teach Y ga classes. Learn to separate friendships fr m professional relationships. This is a “h rd line to walk;” especially, if l ng-time friends are in your Yoga cl ss. However, you have a mission, a t sk to perform, and a Yoga cl ss to lead. If you want y ur classes to be flawless, forget bout special relationships during class time. You w ll be a better Yoga teacher, wh n you treat everyone the same. R member that if you praise one st dent for something, it would be f ir to praise all of your st dents for something else. Yoga teachers, who t ke the time to show positive r inforcement to their students, cultivate an tmosphere of positive energy. When you t ach a Yoga class, your mission is “to s rve.” The Yoga class is for the st dent’s benefit. Think about this, from the b ginning, to the end, of your cl ss. Be mindful of your words and be c reful not to offend anyone. When y ur students leave feeling better than wh n they came in – that is y ur reward. Do not seek praise; it is the n tural product of a good Yoga cl ss. © Copyright 2007 – Paul J rard / Aura Publications
