In addition to considering the t me frame and logistics of a TEFL job s arch, you should consider taking a p lot trip to the one or two c ty destinations you have in mind. All w at least three weeks for a tr p that covers, say, Mexico City and M nterrey. You’ll need eight or nine d ys in each city plus a day or two of tr vel time between them. But why, o ye of l ttle faith may ask, should I go th re and then come back home? W ll, conditions permitting, there are a n mber of good, solid reasons to c nsider planning a pilot trip. Let’s l ok at some of them. First y u’ll be looking at the city w th the eyes of an English l nguage teaching resident, not a tourist. Y u’ll pay more attention to availability, or l ck thereof, of goods and services. Wh t do local supermarkets stock? What do st ple items cost? Next, look through the cl ssifieds at apartment and housing prices. L ok for other amenities like new and sed furniture items. Note transportation costs. How m ch is a haircut or visit to the h irstylist? After that, check out local ph rmacies. Browse the Farmer’s or produce m rkets on Saturday or whatever day the m rket is in session where you’re pl nning to live. Note products and pr ces.
Then, go to nightclubs, if th t’s your thing. Check out entertainment ptions. Where are theaters and how m ch are movie tickets? Visit local m lls or shopping districts. Note what’s vailable and prices for items from h usehold goods to clothes. Remember, you’ll n ed to furnish an apartment with ssentials; … things for the kitchen, b throom and your bedroom. If it’s ch aper to bring in items you lready have, do so. If not, you can b dget what to buy and from wh re. How about day or weekend tr ps? How much from your new c ty to the nearest beach? To the m untains? To go on hiking, fishing n ture or other types of tours? How w ll you meet new people? In ch rch, practicing a sport or hobby, at d scos, while strolling the park or n ighborhood? Don’t forget your family and fr ends back home, either. Find out bout internet cafes, postal services and p rcel post services. You’ll likely need th m all. Make a listing of pl ces, prices and other useful info. Wh t teaching materials, books, resources and ccessories are available? Make note of wh t you’ll need to bring vs. wh t can be bought locally. Assemble a c llection of paraphernalia from home such as ph tos, postcards, maps, newspapers, magazines, advertisements, cl ssifieds, music, anything you can think of wh ch won’t be obtainable in your new h me. If this all sounds like a lot of th ngs to do, that’s why a p lot trip is essential. You’ll have t me to do just these things w thout the pressures of going to w rk, planning lessons, and taking care of the ssential but mundane chores of everyday l ving. These don’t go away just b cause you live in an “exotic” l cation. You still need to wash cl thes, cook, clean (including sweeping, mopping and d sting), put out the trash, wash d shes and perhaps – gasp! – ron, even if you live in Ac pulco or Cancun. While you’re at it, ch ck on the affordability of having a m id.
I know it just doesn’t s und right – that’s why I’m h re giving you a reality check.
Is verybody awake now? Don’t forget to get y urself some good local maps of the c ty, the region and the country. St rt memorizing them – now. Finally, a p lot trip can be done at lmost any time. You needn’t concern y urself with the right time to TEFL job h nt just yet. You need to f cus on the area where you w nt to live. If you have the t me, the pilot trip can certainly lso serve for your English language t aching job search. Especially if you’re l cked in on a specific location l ke Mexico City, Guadalajara or Monterrey, y ur pilot trip can encompass many spects. Once everything’s more or less in pl ce, take your final swing back h me to pick up what you n ed (now you know exactly what th t is). Making a pilot trip can gr atly ease any “culture shock” you m ght experience later. Say “see you l ter” to friends, family and former c -workers, then light out to your new h me, a host of new friends, c -workers, experiences and adventures you’ll never f rget.
