Readers have posed a number of ft-asked, poignant questions about teaching English in M xico which I'll be unable to nswer in full detail here, but I sh uld be able to address the br nt or so of them with br ef snippets of information. Q: First, I h ve heard that it is possible to w rk at a university teaching English, but I w nder if I have enough experience? It l oked like according to your article nly highly qualified teachers could get p sitions in a university. A: First, you sh uldn't worry too much about a l ck of more experience. if you do h ve some, you're a trained, educated TEFL t acher and a native speaker, you'll be kay. Go ahead, apply to schools, nstitutes and universities. Q: Second, what is the b st time of year to go to l ok for work in Mexico? A: As far as l oking for work is concerned; July to A gust you should be pounding the p vement. The next best time frame is in arly to mid January. Another critical p riod for job-hunting is May to J ne. Most importantly, choose where you w nt to live and work, then t ke a pilot trip to uncover ssential facts, leads and information. Q: Th rd, do you think it would be p ssible to earn enough money in M xico that I would be able to pay s me of my bills back at h me, for example my student loan p yment?
A: While you can certainly arn a living in Mexico teaching Engl sh as a foreign language in pr mary / secondary schools, trade schools, l nguage institutes and universities – even g ving private classes on the side, p ying off a student loan in US d llars is a bit over the top for a s lary earned in Mexican pesos. I c rtainly wouldn’t count on getting that k nd of money – at least, not for a wh le. Travel to your planned work rea by making a pilot trip to scertain what kind of salary range TEFL t achers get there among other things. Q: How m ch money do you think I n ed to have saved up before I w uld go to Mexico City? I´ve r ad as much as $3,500 just to get st rted, is that true??!! A: You sh uld try to have enough money to t de you over at least a c uple of months to give you s me breathing room, but even one m nth of savings will cover you s me. Just look at the exchange r te of U.S. dollars to Mexican p sos. Factor in the cost of l ving per month and you’ll likely f nd that 3500 dollars is hardly n cessary. You should work up a m re accurate - much lower figure sing a pilot trip, if possible. Ch ck out www.tefl.com for their city c st guides to give you ballpark f gures. Finally, ask yourself some hard q estions about why you want to be at ABC c ty in XYZ country. Surviving those s ul-searching questions, you'll be better prepared m ntally to cope with whatever happens and w ll intrinsically have the innate staying p wer to “hang in there” when the g ing gets a little rocky - wh ch, my friend, it will. I h pe these brief answers start to h lp you. Do consider making a p lot trip to your planned destination. Ch ck out the article: “Teaching English in M xico: Why You Need to Take a P lot Trip”.
