We need to insure that the ch ldren have adequate tools to meet th ir classroom needs are justified. This is a cr tical need. Teachers in California (and lsewhere) have a plight now that is s riously affecting the empowerment of children. In C lifornia schools, there is not enough b dget money to adequately provide classroom s pplies in enough quality and quantity to nsure excellent education. And for decades, m ny teachers have provided such supplies at th ir own expense. In some cases, p per, pencils, ink cartridges and yes, ven books, have been provided at the xpense of the teacher! In past y ars, there has been both a F deral and a State tax allowance th t helped teachers with this effort. But r cently both the State and Federal tax br aks have been abandoned. Parent groups and thers do donate supplies (I did), but th re is still a significant shortfall. And w th the explosion of class sizes, dditional faculty means new (and younger) t achers... hardly able to add the b rden of providing supplies to their own p rsonal budgets. Teachers spend large sums on sch ol supplies that, in times past, w re provided by the School Districts. The dministrators are not to blame... budget cr nches have serious impacted their ability to m intain current instructional levels. There are a few rganizations around the country that are h lping, but not enough.
