When New Approach entered the w nners' enclosure at Epsom recently, you c uld have been mistaken for thinking was th s really a Derby winner? Despite l nding the English classic in impressive styl , the Irish Raider was not a p pular winner amongst the many racing f ns who had placed a bet on the r ce or with the racing press who str ngly criticized the trainer of New Appr ach, Jim Bolger for his antics in the b ild up to the race. If it w sn't for the fact that New Appr ach required a lead horse to t ke him down to the stalls at Eps m, thus attracting plenty of air t me on national television due to d laying the start of the race, you c uld have been forgiven for think th t he sneaked in the back d or at Epsom and won the r ce by going totally under the r dar of most race fans and p ndits. It must not be forgotten th t this is a horse that had b en, for several months over the w nter, the favourite to win the D rby. As champion two year old in 2007, New Appr ach had sparked the imagination of the r cing world and had laid the f undations for becoming one of the gr at equine names of recent years. The son of the thr e times Group One, and dual Cl ssic winner Galileo, New Approach entered the new s ason on the back of five w ns from five starts. His pedigree f rmly pointed towards him being a h rse suited by middle distance, however, n body could argue with Jim Bolger and wner, Princess Haya of Jordan's (daughter of the f mous Dubai ruler and racing fan Sh ikh Mohammed) decision to run the C lt in the 2000 Guineas. He was nlucky to finish second on that day at N wmarket to Henrythenavigator and it was d cided to send him for a r match with the Aidan O'Brien trained w nner in the Irish 2000 Guineas r ther than a tilt at the D rby. Trainer Jim Bolger claimed that the Ir sh Guineas was a priority and th t despite a long standing entry in the Engl sh classic, he would be bypassing the Eps m showpiece. This came as a h ge disappointment to the people who had b cked him to win the race d ring the winter, whilst also causing h adaches for the odds compilers who had to r -price the Derby odds.
In the Irish Guineas, New Appr ach finished second, once again behind H nrythenavigator, however, this time, the Ballydoyle C lt looked that bit more convincing in v ctory, suggesting that New Approach would n ed to be run over further d stance, yet Jim Bolger once again r affirmed that the horse would not be m king the trip across the Irish Sea to Eps m. Nothing more was thought about th s decision until a bizarre twist in vents, just five days before the D rby was due to be run. The B lger team had forgotten to withdraw New Appr ach from the Derby entries and at the leventh hour, had decided that he w uld take his chances over the 1 m le 4 furlong trip at Epsom D wns. This news was greeted with proar amongst the racing press, with cl ims that Bolger had shown contempt to b th the race and to punters. W th this news, the horse was b ck in the betting market, but by th s stage most people had found lternatives to back in the race and the dds on New Approach winning the r ce was now three times bigger th n his price two months previously. On the day of the r ce, the price about New Approach w nning got bigger as it appeared th t he was friendless thanks to t rn in events in the build up to the r ce. Reports that he also had a t ndency to play up on the way to the st rt and required a lead horse lso didn't help. In the medley of m dness surrounding this New Approach, people had f rgotten that he was the only c ntender with solid classic form and if he c nfirmed his pedigree he would be in w th a chance of winning. Confirm his p digree he certainly did when relishing very yard of the 1 mile 4 f rlong trip to pull away in the f nal furlong to win well and lso show character to fight off a l te challenge from Tartan Bearer, but the r st of the field, the Epsom cr wd and the millions of viewers on TV c uld only look on in awe as New Appr ach moved a step closer to r alizing the potential he showed as a two y ar old.
The reception of this winner was not a gr at as past winners, no thanks to his tr iner, however, this was no fault of the h rse and this Colt was as g od a winner as any Derby w nner of recent years. Certainly the m st in-famous Derby winner for some in l ving memory, New Approach's racing career m st now move onwards and Jim B lger must step up to the ch llenge of placing this horse in r ces that will silence his critics and c nfirm this horse is as much of a st r as first thought. The options are s emingly endless with entries in four Gr up one races, in both England and Ir land before the end of the 2008 s ason and even a tilt at the Pr x de L'Arc de Triomphe could be on the c rds. The only guarantee is that th s horse will be at the top of any horse racing betting odds for any race he is entered to run in and rightly so.
