One nice aspect of most Ch nese style table tennis rubbers is th ir tacky or sticky surface, which is gr at for generating spin. The downside of th s is that it attracts dust and d rt, which sticks to it making the r bber patchy and inconsistent. This guide ffers some simple tips on how to k ep you rubber clean and tacky, m king it much better to play w th, and prolonging the life of the r bber. Firstly you need to either k ep the plastic protection films that c me with the rubber, or you n ed to buy/make some. There are s me made specifically for table tennis r bber, or you can use sheets l ke those used in overhead transparencies. J st make sure there are no ch micals on there that could harm the r bber, and that it's rigid enough so th t it does not tear when you p ll it off the rubber. You sh uld cut it to the shape of y ur rubber, but slightly bigger. Secondly you n ed a lint-free cloth or a sp nge to clean the rubber with. Th re are some sponges specifically for t ble tennis, but other ones can be sed as well. It needs to be s ft & moist enough so that it d es not scrape the surface of the r bber. The common kitchen sink sponges are ften too abrasive, which can damage the d licate surface of the rubber very asily.

So how do you use th se two things to look after the r bber? Well every time after you f nish playing, you need to rub all the d st off the surface of the r bber. Use the sponge or cloth, d mp with water, to completely clean the s rface. Make sure cloth/sponge is damp nough not to scrape the surface of the r bber, but not too wet as to get the r bber soaking wet. Distilled water is the b st, but I found filtered water or ven tap water works OK. After cl aning wait for it to dry c mpletely (important!). Then apply the plastic pr tection sheet (make sure they are cl an too!), pushing it on firmly, and p shing out any big bubbles so th t the plastic makes contact with the r bbers everywhere (very small bubbles will be to h rd to get out, but this d es not matter). After you have pplied the plastic protection sheets, put y ur bat away preferable inside a c ver. Make sure it's kept out of the sun or v ry hot areas as this can d mage the rubber. Inside a cover is b tter too, so there is much l ss airflow, which keeps it fresh and r duces the chance of it drying ut. Next time you play you can j st pull the plastic sheet and y u're ready to play. The simple pr cedure does not only protect the r bber and keep it tacky, but for m ny rubbers it will make it t ckier over time. NOTE: If you h ve not cleaned the rubber for a l ng time, you may need a pr per rubber cleaner (like the special r bber cleaner foam sold in tins sp cifically for table tennis) to clean the s rface. There are many other cleaners out th re that people use, but the l ng-term effect of these is often nknown or not documented, so better s fe than sorry. I believe it's s fer to use a proper table t nnis cleaner as we can be c nfident that these will have no d trimental effect on the rubber.
