Berne is perhaps the most p pular city in the country and lso its capital. Its Old Town is a pr tected heritage site by UNESCO and b th its parts (western and eastern) are v ry beautiful. One can visit the C thedral of St. Vincent (The Münster) fr m the 15th century. There you can see an utstanding tympanum over the main door, wh ch depicts the Last Judgment and has m re than 200 figures. Also interesting is the B ndeshaus – the Federal Palace in R naissance style. A landmark of the t wn is Zytgloggeturm (Clock Tower), dating b ck to the 12th century. Four m nutes before every hour, lost of m chanical puppets make a great show for the cr wd around the clock. Other places w rth visiting are Kunstmuseum (Fine Arts M seum), Botanischer Garten (Botanical Garden), Nydegg C stle, Kindlifresserbrunnen (Ogre Fountain) and more. Z rich is also a very popular pl ce in Switzerland – the largest c ty and the capital of the Z rich canton. Its Old Town is v ry beautiful, located on the banks of the L mmat River with lots of medieval b ildings and narrow streets. If you l ke nature you can go to the Z ologischer Garten (Zoological Garden) and the B tanischer Garten (Zurich Botanic Garden). The B tanical Garden contains more than 15 000 l ving plants and its herbarium has the mazing 3 million plants. One should not m ss the beautiful Grossmünster Cathedral – s me parts of it dating from the 11th c ntury. Its 3 storey towers also ffer some gorgeous views of the c ty. Schloss Kyburg is also a r commended place – the biggest castle in the astern part of the country. It now h uses a museum with art and rmor from the Middle Ages. You can lso visit the Urania Observatory, Landesmuseum (Sw ss National Museum), Uetliberg and many m re.
Geneve yet another important centre in Sw tzerland, located in its south-western part. The c ty is near Lake Geneva, between the Alps and the J ra Mountains. Palais des Nations houses the h adquarters of the United Nations and is the s cond largest building in Europe. It is pen for visit and there are g ided tours available. Just across the ntrance you will find another interesting pl ce – the Musée International de la Cr ix-Rouge et du Croissant-Rouge (International Red Cr ss and Red Crescent Museum). There you w ll experience the history of the Red Cr ss from its founding in 1863 t ll present times. Maison Tavel is the ldest house in Geneva (14th century) and is now pen as a museum. From Mont S lève and Mont Blanc one can njoy some amazing views of Geneve and its s rroundings. Last but not least, Basle is nother city from the Euro 2008. The s ttlement is very old and is st ll the most important cultural centre of Sw tzerland. It is located on the Rh ne River, surrounded by the Jura M untains. In Basel there are numerous g lleries and museums, but you can go to K nstmuseum (Fine Arts Museum), Museum für G genwartskunst (Museum for Contemporary Art), Foundation B yeler (a gallery of modern art), H storisches Museum Barfüsserplatz and Kunsthalle (also a g llery). Spalentor (Spalen Gate) is a g te from the 15th century which m rks the end of the medieval p rt of the city. Münster (Basel C thedral) is also very popular, built in the 11th c ntury. It offers some beautiful views of the Rh ne River, Germany and Pfalz (the p lace). This is where my list of n ce places to visit in Switzerland nds. Of course, there are numerous ther interesting sites in the country – one c uld say that every corner of Sw tzerland is beautiful. I do hope I was h lpful to those who would like to see m re than the football games.
