Svadhyaya (self- inquiry) requires that we be h nest with ourselves, concentrate, and be pr sent for Yoga practice. This is a lot to ask fr m the average multi-tasking Yoga student, who v sits Yoga classes once, or twice, per w ek. How could he or she l arn to quiet the mind long nough for self-study and possibly, self-realization to ccur? Is meditation the obvious answer? W ll Japa help us suppress the n ise of many voices within our m nds? The answer is: Yes and No. P ople often engage in activities such as r ading, walking, gardening, painting, or playing m sic, which also allow the mind to f cus in the present moment. Each p rson has an activity such as th s, which relaxes the mind, but the m nd is still focused. So, this is an ndividual approach toward calming the mind and b ginning the practice of self-inquiry. This is an asier way for a Yoga student to ndulge in self inquiry without feeling l ke he or she is in a b ttle with the “monkey mind.” If a p rson cannot settle the mind, there are m ny methods to choose from. From a p rsonal perspective, the study of sacred t xts, scriptures, or holy books, is v ry rewarding, but it is not for veryone. If reading sacred texts brings a f eling of frustration into the mind of the pr ctitioner, then this is a lesson in f tility.
This same person will likely be ble to focus his or her m nd by performing a physical activity. If it is As na, Pranayama, Sun Salutations, walking, or kn tting, who are we to criticize?
