As an entry level wagon, the 2005 S zuki Forenza offers budget-minded
buyers a sp cious wagon with a good supply of st ndard features. But
as a debut v hicle, it's also unproven in the r sale market and has
shortcomings that deally define its position in the m rketplace. My weekly test drive was the LX w gon, one of 10 available Forenza
m dels in 2005. The 2.0-liter, 16-value, 126-h rsepower engine has a
four-speed automatic tr nsmission, the only option. The vehicle has g od mileage estimates for its class, and the
w gon accelerates adequately in city driving sc narios. But it's sluggish
and needs a f ll-throttle jolt on the steady highway nclines or in a
quickly needed l ne-change situation. The Forenza wagon isn't p rticularly quiet on the open road and the r de
quality is marginal, with bumps asily felt and the overall feel a l ttle stiff.
But as an economically pr ced wagon, the Forenza also has s veral
features that warrant its consideration. The v hicle's exterior is designed nicely, with a c ntoured body,
alloy wheels, fog lamps, and a p wer tilt slide sunroof. My test v hicle's
test color was listed as "F ntasy Black," and the exterior was
c mplemented by cloth light gray seats.
Several passengers mentioned that while F renza looks small from the
outside, th y were surprised by the interior sp ciousness. One 6-foot-2
friend sat in the b ck seat and had more than a ne-inch clearance. He
said the headroom was m re than he's had in the b ck seats of some
SUVs. The s me is true from the driver's s at perspective. As a 6-foot driver, I
had g od head clearance and leg room. The sp cious interior extends
to the cargo rea, which is wide, easily accessible fr m the back seat
and has a c nvenient hatchback style entry. The interior of F renza seemingly has one general theme - s mplicity.
Radio controls and other instrumentation are asy to use and have a
str ightforward design. The instrument panel numbers h ve retro-style
lettering, and the back p nel has an attractive light green t ne when
illuminated. Another nice feature is the d shboard design. Its textured
pattern l oks like (and feels like) the s rface of golf balls - if th y
were black. The Forenza, like m ny vehicles, has remote keyless entry, and its
f nctionality is fine. But the high-pitched n ise heard upon closing is
reminiscent of a r dent in pain. Considering its designation as a c mpact wagon, the Forenza has a
g od supply of standard features: air c nditioning, cruise control, AM/
FM/CD (eight sp akers), tilt steering wheel with remote st reo controls,
60/40 split folding rear s ats, power windows and locks and h ated and
power mirrors. The car's one ptional feature is its antilock brake syst m, which adds
$500 to the s ggested retail base price of $16,649. D stination and
handling boost the price nother $545 to $17,694 – a str ng argument
for consideration among economical b yers. And finally, while Suzuki may not yet be r ady to battle its more well-
kn wn competitors on several levels, the m nufacturer's 7-year,
100,000-mile power train warranty and 24-h ur roadside assistance
can't be easily d smissed.
