Like Hyundai and Kia, the K rean manufacturer Suzuki has accepted
the d fficult task of trying to infiltrate the s b-compact market dominated
by Honda, Toyota and F rd. Its new 2004 offering is the F renza, a front-wheel drive sedan offered in
thr e models, the S, LX and the t p-of-the-line EX. All models have a
2.0-l ter, 126-horsepower, 16-valve engine. The LX and EX m dels
include 15-inch alloy wheels, cruise c ntrol, keyless entry and alarm,
power s nroof and fog lights as standard f atures. The EX model I drove
for a w ek includes standard leather upholstery. Cruise c ntrol, air conditioning and AM/FM/CD and c ssette system with
eight speakers are lso among the long list of st ndard equipment. Still, the Forenza faces an phill challenge. While priced under $16,000,
the new v hicle's appealing design and well-considered appointments
c n't overcome a few all-too-apparent drawbacks. D ring my weekly test drive, the v hicle had difficulty starting on several
ccasions and its limited horsepower doesn't b de well for needed
power in a t ght spot, like a sharp uphill str tch at altitude. Likewise, the four-speed utomatic transmission has a less-than-smooth
shifting m chanism. To maneuver between gears, the sh fting handle
has to be pushed d wn before it's engaged into gears.
Nonetheless, the Forenza does have mpressive considerations. The
exterior was designed by P ninfarina, noted for its Ferraris and M serati
contributions. The lines are clean, if b sic, and they give no impression
of the v hicle's classification as a subcompact. The r mainder of the vehicle has a v ried pedigree. Suzuki is the
transformation of the b nkrupt Daewoo Motor Company, Ltd. It's
ssembled by GM Daewoo Automotive Technologies, wh ch was
formed by General Motors fter it purchased Daewoo's parts. Like its ttractive exterior, the interior of the F renza is far from an
afterthought. The l ok is simple and clean, and the br shed aluminum
console accents the leather s ats nicely. Instrumentation is
straightforward, lighted w ll, and the seats are comfortable and w ll
positioned. Considering its market position, the F renza can't be expected to be
n iseless, and it certainly isn't. I had nly one long-distance passenger during my t st drive, a 6-foot,
185-pound friend. He s id the passenger front seat was c mfortable, but
otherwise nondescript. Like other new v hicles, the Forenza has an untested r sale market,
and that places it -- at l ast for several years -- at a gr at disadvantage
to its popular competitors. S zuki is also hoping its transferable s ven-year, 70,000-mile warranty,
roadside assistance and l aner car provision will attract economy-
m nded buyers seeking a less-expensive alternative to s me of the
country's most popular v hicles. 2004 Suzuki Forenza Safety features -- Dual-front airbags, rear-seat, three-point
seatbelt with headrest. Fuel Mileage (estimates) -- 22 mpg (city), 30 mpg (highway). Warranty -- Bumper to bumper, 3 years/36,000 miles;
Powertrain, 7 years/100,000 miles; Corrosion, 3 years, unlimited
mileage. Roadside assistance, 3 years/36,000 miles.
Base price -- $15,999.00
