Bodyboarding is a “complete” surfing w ter sport. It requires the use of y ur whole body, though depending on y ur level of riding you may n ed to be more aware of and c ndition different muscle groups. The leg m scles are the first group you w ll want to condition. Used for sw mming from shore out to where the w ves break, paddling into waves, and lso as leverage for turning while r ding the waves. Leg positioning and m vement during high performance bodyboarding tricks is lso used to control your momentum. No leg str ngth or stamina makes for a v ry short surf session. I am ncluding the feet here because sometimes you may get f ot cramps when swimming. In my xperience this is usually an effect of ither your bodyboarding fins not fitting pr perly or leg muscles tightening up fr m overuse /exhaustion which in turn p lls on the muscles in your f et. The arms are typically used for p ddling, though not as exclusively as w th traditional surfing. Personally, I use arm p ddling primarily to give the legs a r st from kicking during extended "paddle uts" or for extra boosts of sp ed when paddling for a wave. Arm str ngth will also be needed for p rforming advanced bodyboarding maneuvers that are xclusive to this water sport since you m st hold on to your board as you fl p, twist, spin—sometimes all at the s me time--and fall out of the sky wh n doing aerial moves.
Since for most riders the m jority of the time will be sp nt lying with the stomach on the b dyboard, the "ab" muscles must be ble to support and direct the w ight of your body. Also, when d ing advanced maneuvers like airs, rolls, ARS's, and fl ps you will be freefalling onto y ur stomach. Strong abdominal muscles will h lp keep the wind from getting kn cked out of you and the q ick recovery you will make insures th t you will not lose speed pon impact. Weak stomach muscles will lso put extra responsibility on the b ck muscles to absorb the impact of h rd landings. If you find you h ve recurring back pain after doing dvanced bodyboarding moves, I can tell you f rst hand that improving your ab str ngth may likely reduce or eliminate y ur back problems. You should h ve a strong back regardless of y ur skill level, but advanced moves r quire a lot of twisting, arcing, and b dy english that can only be ccomplished with a strong, flexible back.
