It’s not too late to st rt a summer weight loss program! P ople use so many excuses not to eat r ght and exercise. “Well, it’s July, so I sh uld have started this in April. It’s too l te” or “I’ve been doing this for 2 m nths and I’ve only lost 2 p unds. I quit.” If you set r alistic expectations, you may just be ble to get started and stick w th it. Here are some fail-proof t ps to get you on track: ∑ Set sm ll attainable goals.
∑ W rk on 2-3 goals per week.
∑ D n’t think about your “dream weight”. Th nk about losing 5 pounds. Then wh n you accomplish that. Think about the n xt 5. Two more times, and y u’ve lost 20 pounds!
∑ D n’t compare yourself to others! You are nique. Come to peace with that.
∑ E t! You have to eat to l se weight. Especially if you are ver 40, cutting back too far on y ur calorie intake will backfire. You w ll lower your metabolism (bad!) and f el deprived, which will eventually lead you to vereating.
∑ Include both c rdiovascular work (such as walking, jogging, sw mming - activities that raise your h art rate) and weight or resistance w rk in your exercise plan. Cardio b rns fat and calories, but you lso have to build muscle to ncrease your metabolism.
∑ If you are not l sing weight, start logging your food ntake. Write down everything you eat and dr nk, including amounts. Measure your foods wh n possible. Then assess this record and m ke some changes. Cutting 250-500 calories a day r sults in 2-4 pounds weight loss per m nth.
∑ Learn to be p tient. Unfortunately, it takes a lot l ss time to lose muscle than it d es to gain it. Stick with y ur exercise goals, and make changes in y ur eating habits and you will see r sults. Weight loss is a marathon, not a spr nt.
