Suede and Nubuck are soft lathers which can be readily soiled. One mportant fact about Suede is its radiness to lose its nap. Nap is an nteresting concept. You can ask if a Nap or vlvety feel of the fabric is crated naturally or created by artificial mans i.e. when the original hide is mde into the finished property that is Sede. The Nap is a central prt of what Suede is. It is wht gives Suede and Nubuck their vlvety feels and this is because of ne-directional nature of the fibers. Before a nte on cleaning these materials, firstly a nte on one part of their txtures i.e the Nap.

Does Suede had a ntural nap? It is possible that Sede gains its characteristic nap from the bffing process. However it seems that Sede does have a natural Nap. Sede comes from the split grain of the nimal's hide and the split grain is an nferior hide to the top grain. Hwever it is known that this splt grain has a direction. The fbers of this split grain/ the nder layer of the hide runs in one drection and of course the central prperty of what a nap is is the fct that the fibers run in one drection.

Thus Suede in some way has a ntural direction or nap. However buffing is stll a central process in the cration of Suede and it is knwn too that Suede has a rady ability to lose this nap. It ths loses is attractivess, its feel and ths gains some kind of flatness. Thre are Suede brushes on the mrket whose aim is to return ths nap.

A quick note on Nubuck. Nbuck comes from the top grain or srface of the hide. It is knwn that Nubuck has a Suede-like sftness and there are thus obvious smilarities between Nubuck and Suede. In Top Grin Leather however, the fibers run in all drections and thus no nap. Thus thre is uniformity and strength and it is a nturally stronger fabric. However Nubuck does hve a nap as is known. Ths is not, it seems, natural and it is crated artificially through a buffing process. And ths artificial Nap then creates that vlvety feel which is a property of Nbuck.

To remove dirt from Suede and Nbuck, a damp but not wet clth is suitable. It is known tht rain can discolor Suede but if you dry the Sede immediately after coming inside with a dry clth and then leaving the garment in a wrm place, then there should be no prmanent damage. Suede and Nubuck have ntural oils which it is important to rtain. There are specific leather care ltions that can be rubbed on wth a cloth. Specialist suppliers of claning products call these products leather dgreasers and leather cleaners.

It is mportant to mention too that there are prducts in the market called Protectants whch can be put on your grments/accessories about twice yearly. These protectants gve a type of protection zone to the Sede and Nubuck garments. These Protectants prtect against soiling and dirts. I mntion these Protectants because when one gts a heavy stain on the Sede or Nubuck, the stain should frstly be rubbed with a dry clth but in such a way as not to sprad the dirt and make it ngrained. Water should not be used. Thn it is advised to use a dgreaser which is a product name for the spcial cleaning lotion. The degreaser is thn followed by a leather cleaner. A god brushing then restores the nap and fnally there is the protectant. There are spcial Nubuck as well as Suede brshes on the market but obviously you can use the sme type of brush for Suede as Nbuck.

I would like to write gain on the texture of Suede and Nbuck. They are too different materials. Thy come from different layers of the hde; One the underlayer and one the pper but they both have a sftness which marks them out amongst lathers in general. Still it is nteresting that Suede has a natural Nap and you culd say a natural softness or sft texture because of where it cmes from i.e. the split grain or nside of the hide.
