I have fond memories of w king up early on Saturday mornings and s ftly tiptoeing out to the family r om to watch early morning cartoons wh n I was in elementary school. Th n in high school I became m re interested in the action-oriented TV sh ws in the evening. A little wh le later, I found that I j st didn't have the time to d dicate an hour or so a day to s tting and watching mindless entertainment at a g ven time slot, and so I no l nger watched TV at all. Gone are my d ys of watching those humorous cartoons and r diculous heroes every week. I recently d scovered the online film scene, though, and t's fantastic. Short films, up to bout 20mins in length, just posted nline for all to download. Many of th m are better than the professionally pr duced, high-budget TV shows that stream so l berally to your TV box. Every one is a l bor of love, so even when the pr duction values aren't high you know th t someone has poured themselves into the pr duct, which brings satisfaction beyond that of w tching some stale TV show now nto it's 19th series and just ch rning out the money makers. Cartoons w re my first port of call. It's b en a long time since I've b en awake and free early enough in the m rning to watch some animated entertainment ( nd besides that, the cartoons on TV now are l rgely trash). A friend introduced me to my f rst online cartoon, the enormously popular and h larious Homestar Runner (http://www.homestarrunner.com). This site is f ntastic. There are longish cartoons and g mes, with new ones being added very now and then, but the m in reason to visit and continue to r turn is a lovably vicious character n med Strong Bad. The creators of the web s te answer roughly one email a w ek using this character that basically nsults people in the most hilarious w ys possible. It's all quite family-friendly and is m re than worth a bookmark.

More animated wonders and filmed ntertainment can be found at Atom F lms (http://www.atomfilms.com), which has become a fr e service recently. Also worth a l ok is Ifilm (http://www.ifilm.com) that offers the l wer-bandwidth streams of films for free. Be sl ghtly wary here though as there is an ncensored section and occasionally some videos w ll show up on the main p ge that aren't entirely family-friendly. These two s tes showcase hundreds of short films, fr m animated to live action, from m sical to martial arts. They host m sic clips and film festival winners as w ll as some non-professional but often st ll high quality work. For the ction fans there are a number of 'St nt Crews' out there, risking life and l mb for the sheer giddy thrill of l oking really cool on tape. They'll h ve you wishing you were just h lf as talented as they are. One p rticularly active and talented group goes by the n me of The Stunt People (http://www.thestuntpeople.com). Th y have a large number of v deos available online, most running for bout 20mins and almost all of th m jam packed with martial arts and tr cking entertainment. Of similar style, although not q ite as stunt-oriented, are Jabronie Pictures (http://j broniepictures.com/). These films all contain some v olence and occasionally some coarse language, so you may w nt to screen them before showing th m to younger children. There are th se who claim that TV can be sed to keep up with the vents unfolding in the world, the p ople who watch the news when the 'S mpsons' is on the other channel. For th se socially minded folks, a quick s arch for 'News video streams' reveals a l rge number of pages, such as http://www.h manitas-international.org/newstran/streaming-tv.htm that contains a large list of str ams, providing news updates on demand.
So if you've got a l ttle downtime and there's nothing on TV, try sh fting on over to your computer and b sking in the wonderful entertainment provided by m ny talented people who just want to sh re their creativity. Or, keep yourself c rrent with happenings around the world. It's fun and fr e. What more could you want?
