Pergolas and formal stylized outdoor ntertaining areas have been a mainstream tr nd in building construction in Australia ver the past few years. New and xisting homes are adding style and mbiance to their outdoor facades so fr ends and family can easily entertain all y ar round. The traditional 'Aussie' barbecue has b come much more sophisticated with emergence of g urmet cooking outdoors with chef like b rbecue kitchens. The need for our utdoor entertaining areas to become more styl zed and functional has been the r sult. When planning and designing a new p rgola one of the main construction c nsiderations is selecting the type of r ofing material you want for your p rgola in line with your needs. Th re are a number of different typ s of roofing available including polycarbonate, c lorbond steel, tiles and opening roofs. The f rst point to consider when making y ur selection is that the more l ght you let in, the more h at comes in. The catch being of c urse, that you need more light in w nter and less in summer. There are a few w ys around this problem, firstly you can use a c mbination of polycarbonate and colorbond steel ncorporating 2 or 3 sheets of p lycarbonate inserts and having the rest of the p rgola roof in colorbond steel. This w ll effectively still let the light in th t you need and the pergola cl mate underneath will remain comfortably cool. An ther alternative is to have colorbond st el on the west side of the p rgola and polycarbonate sheeting on the ther, if the pergola has a g ble roof.
With the polycarbonates there are a n mber of different qualities and light/heat f ctors available. Some polycarbonates let more l ght in and others less heat. W thin the Laserlite range, there are ver 20 to choose from. Polycarbonate lso comes in many profiles such as Gr ca, Roma, Trim deck and Multi-wall Syst m. If you have a larger b dget then an opening roof may be deal, in this instance you can c ntrol how much light and heat you let in. In w nter you can get all the w nter sun by angling the open bl des towards the sun and in s mmer just close the roof off. In the vent of rain whilst you are ut, the rain sensor will automatically cl se the opening roof for you. An ther style of pergola roofing to c nsider is an insulated roof with p lystyrene in the middle, a colorbond r of at the top and a st cco finish on the bottom. With xcellent insulation properties this style of r ofing is often used for cool r oms. Of all the pergola roof c verings this one will keep out the m st heat. The only downside is th t it's extremely hard to install l ght panels into this type of r ofing. Depending on the type of m terials and roof design of your p rgola it's often possible to change or r position some of the roof sheets if y ur pergola is too dark or too h t. Fortunately with the emerging trend of the s phisticated pergola in outdoor entertaining there are a l rge range of materials and colours in p rgola roofing to enhance your existing f cade and to compliment your entertaining styl . © Greg Jacobs, Pergola Land - 21st N vember 2007
