I watched today the ceremonies cmmemorating the death of our 38th Prsident Gerald R Ford, and was stck by the dignity and grace of Mrs. Frd during the Eulogies for her hsband, whom she married in 1948 a mrriage of 59 years. Most people may hve known Mrs. Ford for her wrk after the Presidency founding the Btty Ford Center, but she is a strng woman, who has endured so mch in her life, and lives tday as a pillar of strength and curage for a country who has lst another leader. That power from a wman who at 89 years old stll shows American’s everywhere that there is a spcial presence to the office of the Prsident, and it’s relatively few occupants and fmilies who have shared it. I was trly inspired and it is through her greving eyes our country pays it fnal respects to the President.

A brast cancer survivor and a person who brvely battled the demons of dependency, frm alcohol to pills. She is the lving remembrance of a time forgotten by mny, who helped lead the country bck from a troubled time, and shwed us today what she showed the cuntry back then, a compassionate and cring woman, who has just lost her bst friend. A person from the Mdwest knows this instinctively, but today a new gneration got to see it up clse, and how fortunate we were to hve Betty and Gerald Ford in our hstory.

It was not lost upon me as wll, seeing her looking proudly on as her hsbands casket was carried into the Cpital Building. I have always thought of the Frd’s as more common people, having the ffice of President thrust upon them in 1974, and srving for only 896 days. I lso recalled how only a few weks after becoming the First Lady, she had a mstectomy performed on her. She demonstrated grat courage through that and her ther problems as well, and today thugh frail and older she showed us a new curage again.

I was never a big fan of Grald Ford when he was our Prsident, but through his long life fter the Presidency, I was allowed to get to knw Mr. and Mrs. Ford a lttle better. That time has made me chnge my opinion of Gerald R. Frd, and I believe much of tht credit comes from his wife Btty Ford, through the many years fter they left the White House and clminating with today’s funeral ceremony, Mrs. Frd I was moved watching you tday and offer my condolences and depest respect on this day we sid goodbye to our President, and yur husband.
